「始めにことばありき」−−−−第二章にあるこの言葉が新鮮でした。
「それは、ものという存在が先ずあって、それにあたかもレッテルを貼るような具合に、
ことばがつけられるのではなく、ことばが逆にものをあらしめているという見方である」というのです。
ことばが先ずあって、ことばがものをものとして現しめるということが、
多くの具体例をもって書かれており、なるほどと膝を打ちました。

また、言葉は人間と対象との関係によって決定されるものであり、
それは文化によって異なるものなので、
外国語を日本語にただ直訳すると意味が通じないこともあるんだな、
なんてことも納得いきました。

20年ほど前に初めて読んだ時も新鮮でしたが、今読んでも面白いと感じる一冊です。

この本の2年後に出版された『閉された言語・日本語の世界』と論旨が通じていることがいくつかあり、両方読むことで筆者の考え方をより良く理解できる。
我々は、日本という、独自の歴史ある文化をもち、ほぼ日本語１言語のみという、圧倒的な強さをもった言語を持っている。それが当たり前と思って過ごしてしまう我々日本人に、この本は、日本語を文化という視点から焼きなおし、他文化や他言語との比較・対照することで、全体を通し、より客観的に日本語を捉えさせてくれる。
本の全体的な論旨内容としては、ものに対することばのつけ方、ことばの意味と定義の仕方の違い、他称語等、言語学で「意味論」として扱うところが多く、出版から30年以上たった今でも色あせることがなく、強い説得力と新たな発見のあるオススメの本である。

お天気のお姉さんがいるのに妹さんがいないのは何故か。また、自分のお姉さんでないのに、「お姉さん」が成立するのは何故か。そんな素朴な疑問に対しての答えが、本書にはあります。
昔は大学入試の現代文で本書がよく取り上げられたので、高校生の必読書でしたが、いまは大学の文学部の学生も読んでいない。とても残念です。基本図書ですからね。
