文豪といわれるモームの作品ですが、エンターテイメント度が高い作品に仕上がっています。
実際に第一次世界大戦時にスパイだった作者をモデルにしたスパイスリラーです。007風のアクション活劇を期待すると見当違いですが、ジョン・ル・カレ風の落ち着いたスリラーを読みたい方にはお薦めできます。
主人公はあくまでスパイという全体の中の歯車に過ぎないので、事件の全貌が明らかにされないケースが多いのですが、歴史の大きなうねりに翻弄される市井の人々の姿が、巧みに描かれています。他のモームの作品も読んでみたくなりました。

「月と六ペンス」などで有名な文豪、サマセット・モームの実体験に基づくスパイ小説の古典である。
舞台は第一次世界大戦初期の欧州。
英国の諜報部員アシェンデンは様々な任務を帯びて暗躍する。
本書は「連作読切形式」「短編集」というのが通り相場だが、収められている16のストーリーのいくつかは明確につながっていて、1冊まるごと長編小説といえなくもない。
前半部分はスイス、イタリア、フランスを舞台に様々な登場人物が入り乱れ、任務を遂行するアシェンデンの前に立ちはだかるまさに「スパイ小説」にふさわしい内容なのだが、後半部分になるとX市駐在英国大使の打ち明け話（過去のロマンス）やアシェンデン自身のロマンスなど、ロシア革命は背景にあるものの、どちらかといえば通俗小説（とまで言うと言い過ぎか？）っぽくなってくる。
前半はみごとなハードボイルドなのだが、後半になって茹でが甘くなった？
とはいえ、さすがにモーム。そのスト―リテリングの巧みさは素晴らしい。四百数十ページとそこそこのボリュームだが、長さを感じさせずに読者を引っ張ってくれる。
序文にも書かれているが、プロットの連鎖で読者をクライマックスに導くべし、というモームの小説作法の面目躍如たる一冊である。■

　英国情報部員と言われているサマセット・モームのスパイ小説である。主人公アシェンデンは作家で、人間の心理の機微に通じているところを情報部幹部の大佐Rに見込まれ、海外での諜報活動の一端を依頼される。
　スパイ小説と言っても、時は第一次世界大戦時、場所は中立国スイスのジュネーブ等を舞台とする、何とも古き良き欧州の香りがたっぷりの小説である。プレイヤーも、アメリカ・ソ連といったハードボイルド系は姿を見せず、殺人シーンも全くない。
　中には、英国大使の悲恋経験話などスパイとは無関係の作品もあり、やはり全てを書くことに対しては英国政府の待ったが掛かったのではないかと想像される。とにかく、読み出せば一気に読んでしまう娯楽大作と言えるだろう。
