　漆聖とよばれたという松田権六が、うるしの並外れた堅牢さや不可思議な生態、またそうした生態を駆使して育まれた漆塗りの技術など、うるしとそれにまつわるものの魅力を余すところなく語りました。本書を読み終わる頃には、目の前の漆器を見る目が変わっているのではないでしょうか。
　筆者がうるしと歩んだ60年をつづった第2部は、読み手を刺激する豪胆なエピソードに溢れていて一種の人生読本としても魅力的です。

着物目当てに出かけた深川の骨董市で、羊羹色した漆の重箱を目にしました。
この本によると、漆が焼けて羊羹色になるのは、国産の良い漆を使っているからだそうです。
でも焼けてしまった色は、元には戻らない、上から塗りなおすしかないそうです。

夫婦椀を購入しました。黒い漆器と赤い漆器。
漆の樹液は透明で、黒い漆は墨などで、赤い漆は朱泥などで着色したものだそう。

椀の芯の部分がどのように出来ているのかを、できあがったばかりの品を見て判別する方法はないそうです。長期間使ってみて、剥げたり、ひびが入ったりすれば、木地に悪いものを使っていた、と知れるそうです。
また使う前から艶が出るように、漆に油を混ぜたものなども、ひびができる原因になるそうです。

銀座に新しくできた輪島塗のお店で、夫婦箸を購入しました。
漆の器の作り方も産地により様々、この本では輪島の工法を誉めていません。
それで著者は輪島では嫌われているそうです。
産地で嫌われても自分の思ったとおりのことが書けるのは、著者は漆工芸の人間国宝であり、漆に関して他人の意図を気にかけたり、自分の感性を疑ったりする必要のないポジションにいるからです。
だからおもしろい。
どの産地のものも等しく誉めているムック本などとは大きな違いです。
先達からの「お導き」により、実物に触れる前に観念的な価値観ができてしまうのはちと怖いですが、ひとつずつ実物にあたって、著者の意見が正しいか調べるには時間も知識もお金も不足。
ありがたく今後の漆器購入の参考にさせていただこうと思います。

親戚がゆずってくれた古い和服は、刺繍の上から漆を塗ってありました。
この本を読んでから、なんだか自分の周囲が漆づいてきたような･･･。
