　一般に『韓非子』は非情の書として知られており、読まず嫌いの向きも結構あると思うが､じっくり向かい合って読むと人間の行動心理を如何に冷静に見つめていたか､がよくわかる。ここでは君主が失ってはいけない二つの権力『賞罰』が如何に大切かを訴えており､君主の心は臣下に読ませてはならず､どのようにして君主が力を失っていったかが､たくさんの事例を上げて説明されている。
　しかしこれは君主(社長)の立場としてのみ読むものであろうか？　今の時代では社員としてこの書を読み､如何にのし上がっていくか､という形でも読むことができるだろう。ここに挙げられている話は良くも悪くもわれわれ人類の教訓なのだ。
　この本に余計な解説本はいらない。この本を虚心になって読み､所々で立ち止まって､自分の置かれた立場と比べ合わせながら読み進めばこの本が現代にも通じる実にリアルなものであることが再認識されるだろう。

一般に、韓非子は非情な現実主義が貫かれている、と言われます。
それゆえに、誤解され読まず嫌いされる向きもあるようです。

彼は韓の公子として生まれ、小国韓が衰微するさまを目の当たりにした彼が、
吃音を克服するために明快な文章を書いてまで、伝えたいことは多くはありません。

彼は自著とされない部分を含め、「配下の行動を言動と一致するか確認せよ」と主張し、
「信賞必罰」を自らの判断で、適切に行うことで「忠臣のやる気を引き出す」のが君主の仕事としています。
その過程で臣下、家族等がどのような手法で君主を騙し、妨害するかを例示によって多く紹介しています。

彼の現実主義は、私欲のない善人の存在を否定するものではなく、
あくまで君主が配下、民衆に「公平且つ厳格」に接するよう求め、
その結果として、配下、ひいては民衆が報われるような統治をするための、
ある種の機械的、あるいは没我的な手法「法術」を提示するものに過ぎません。

現代的な言い方をすれば、「公平」且つ「厳格」な法律判断を行政機関に求め、
「国民の活力」引き出す手法を示唆しているという点で、リベラル的な情緒に流されがちな
現代先進国の政治家、国民に、警鐘を鳴らした本という意味をもち、
現代の民主主義国家においても価値が高い本といえます。

韓非子は秦の統一のころの韓（洛陽付近）の人で、その政治理論の評判を聞いた始皇帝に請われて秦に赴き、そこで同じ筍子の門下生だったといわれる楚の出身の丞相（総理大臣に相当）の李斯に怪しまれて毒を仰いで自ら命を絶つことを命じられた。韓非子は自著で君主に意見具申することが如何に難しいことがを説いているが、それを自らの人生の悲劇で証明してしまったのである。「矛盾」「蛇足」などの言葉を生み百家争鳴期の思想家のなかでは歯切れのよい批評的文章を書いた人物としては、かの孟子と双璧をなすだろう。よく「孫子」との優劣を議論されるが「韓非子」は政治理論を説き「孫子」は軍事理論を説く。もとより役割が違うのであって、そういう議論は不毛だと思う。「韓非子」が説く非情なマキャベリズムは、現代人にも傾聴に値するものがあるだろう。秦以降の中国の歴史は、その後儒家思想を建前として、実は法家思想に基づく皇帝専制政治が清代まで続くのである。
