ボルヘスの最もボルヘスらしさが凝縮された傑作短篇集。とても短い短篇のそれぞれに無限の宇宙が封じ込められている。ボルヘスの幻想はイメージ先行ではなく逆説的なロジックや観念から生まれてくるところに特徴がある。またその恐るべき博識は言うに及ばず、宗教や古典文学の題材が多いことから難解で学者的な印象があるかも知れないが、実はこの人の小説は徹頭徹尾遊びだというところに最大の魅力があると思う。縦横無尽に引用されるテキストやその出典は必ずしも真偽が明らかではないし、お得意の架空の小説の書評その他のメタフィクショナルな仕掛けもきわめて遊戯的。「数分間で語りつくせる着想を五百ページにわたって展開するのは、労のみ多くて功少ない狂気の沙汰である」というボルヘス世界の本??はその外観に反してとことん軽やかなのだ。

彼の小説は物語ともエッセーともつかないような体裁をとることが多いが、この短篇集には究極の幻覚的エッセー「トレーン…」からポーを思わせる完璧な小宇宙「円環の廃虚」まで、典型的ボルヘス作品がずらりと並んでいる。すべてのボルヘス作品のメタファーのような「バベルの図書館」やもう一つのボルヘス的テーマである無法者の決闘を描いた「結末」も素晴らしいし、「死とコンパス」の超絶的幾何学ミステリも楽しい。読めば読むほど無限に広がっていく魔法の一冊。

「バベルの図書館」の冒頭、「２４つの文字（letter)」の組み合わせとなる所、「24枚の手紙の組み合わせ」となっています。これでは意味がわかりません。もう少しいい翻訳でないとボルヘスがもったいない。

アルゼンチンが生んだ今世紀最大の幻想作家ボルヘスの 文字通り代表作である自選の短編集。文学の豊富な知識 を背景とし、哲学的宗教的テーマを縦横に援用しながら 彼独自の幻想文学を見事に織り上げている。あまりに 著名な、また至極現代的にインターネット空間の隠喩と 読み取る新たな解釈も新鮮な「バベルの図書館」、

パロディーとしての書評「アルムターシムを求めて」、 物の名前が*存在しない*新たな世界との出会いを探偵 物仕立てで描く(しかも主人公がボルヘス本人である!) 「トレーン、ウクバール、オルビス・テルティウス」 等全17篇収録。
