　アンデルセン童話集全７巻を買いました。そのうちの第１巻目でアンデルセンの比較的初期の話を中心にまとめられている感じです。読み始めると「火打ち箱」、「小クラウスと大クラウス」のようにいきなり人を殺すような怖い話から始まるのはちょっとびっくりしてしまいます。全部で16話の小作品からなりますが、私の印象に残ったものを下記のように偏見をまじえた簡単な説明にてピックアップしてみます。

・旅の道連れ
　旅の途中で助けた死人と一緒に旅行するストーリー、ゾンビ版の鶴の恩返しでしょうか。結構面白いです。
・人魚姫
　一般に知られているストーリーと若干違い、最後に空気になった人魚姫がこれから300年間の修行生活に入ります。
・皇帝の新しい着物（裸の王様）
　詐欺師が人の心につけいる様が生々しく描かれています。オレオレ詐欺にも通じるリアルな描写に迫力を感じます。
・幸福の長靴
　アンデルセン版タイムマシン、ドラえもん的ＳＦ小説のような仕上がりであまり知られていない話だと思います。
・野の白鳥（王子と11羽の白鳥）
　エリサ姫が魔女裁判にかけられる生々しさに迫力があります。最後はほろりと来る感動できるお話です。
・パラダイスの園
　ちょっと難しい東方にある理想郷の話。人間の誘惑に対する弱さなどがテーマです。

　絵本で知られている簡略化された童話と違って読み応えがあり面白いですね。幸福の長靴などは50ページ近くあります。まだ第１巻しか読んでいませんが、アンデルセンの暮らした時代の背景などが読み取れます。どちらかというと大人向けだと思います。

アンデルセンの童話を知らない人はいないと思うのですが、アニメや絵本で接した方も多いのではないでしょうか。それもいいのですが、アンデルセンの書いたものをなるべくそのまま味わってみるのもとても良いと思います。原文が読めればいいのですが、翻訳となればやはりこの作品ではないかと思います。この本は訳者が昭和１３年に翻訳したものを、本人が昭和３８年に改訳したものです。現代語とは趣が異なる部分もありますが逆にアンデルセンの時代をイメージしやすい古風な感じもします。第一巻には、有名な「親指姫」「人魚姫」「裸の王様（皇帝の新しい下着）」が含まれていて、子供の頃読んだり聞いたり見たりしたイメージとはまた違った印象を持つと思います。特に「人魚姫」の悲しみは大人になった今のほうが余計に胸に迫りました。又、「旅の道ずれ」「大クラウスと小クラウス」などブラックな趣の物語など絵本とは違ったアンデルセンの魅力が存分に味わえると思います。文庫のアンデルセンは大人の方向きだと思います。
