大人になった今でも、時々読み返したくなる良書である。

文学史的には価値のない、ただの説教かもしれない。だが、「イワンのばか他八篇」と併せて、この2冊の民話集は私の人生を変えてくれた。

この2冊を初めて読んだのは中学だったか、それとも高校時代だったかもしれない。当時は読書などほとんどしなかったが、「あの小難しい小説で有名なトルストイがこんなものも書くのか」などと軽い気持ちで手に取った。
簡単な内容だが、荒れていた少年時代の私を感化するのには、十分な作品であった。

当時、特に鮮烈な印象を覚えたのは、形式だけのキリスト教徒と隣人愛に溢れた真の意味でのキリスト教徒を対比させた「ニ老人」。他にも、「人はなんで生きるか」「愛のあるところに神あり」など、美しくかつ謎めいたエピソードが詰まっている。
この民話集において語られる「愛」は普遍的なものだろう。キリスト者でない私にとっても十分な薬になる。

「大人のための童話集」といったような本はいくらでもあるだろうが、その種の本で、この2冊の民話集より優れたものはまずないと思える。

社会の暗部や人間のどろどろした情念を描く作品が多い昨今、ロシア民話に基づくこの短編集のように素朴かつ高潔な隣人愛に溢れ、庶民への温かい眼差しに貫かれた作品に出会って本当に幸せだ。民話だからといって絶対ばかにしてはいけない。とても分かりやすいストーリーの背後に、隣人愛が力強く説かれており、しかも説教じみた感じは全くせず、トルストイ一流の筆致で、愛が美しく、気高く描かれているのだ。美辞麗句は一つもない。むしろ農民の粗野な言葉が飛び交い、土の臭いが漂う（訳文は登場人物達の田舎っぽさを実にうまく表現している名訳だ）。しかし全てが、信仰と愛の光に優しく包まれており、読み終わったら心が洗われ、人にもっと親切にしてあげたくなる。

トルストイ晩年の5つの短編集です。

本書の解説に、純粋なる創作とはいいがたい物語ながら、
どの作品も、トルストイなくしては芸術作品にならなかった、とある。

原作やモチーフにした伝説については、読んでいないのでなんともいえないけれど、
トルストイがこの芸術にとって必然であったと言うにふさわしい内容だと思います。

トルストイの晩年の作は、本作も含め、宗教色が濃くなってきますが、芸術性にまさる
トルストイの文章は、へんに”バタ臭く”なく、すんなり入ってきます。

キリスト教的道徳観に立脚した教訓的な物語は、日々の生活で薄汚れた
われわれの心を洗ってくれることでしょう。

「神は、愛である。愛は、神である。」
「人の中に神は、宿る。」
中村白葉の訳もすばらしい。
