　第1巻は、天地開闢から神話時代、日向三代、初代神武天皇を経て、第10代崇神天皇までを収録しています。書き下し文とはいえ、漢文調の文章が難点ですが、苦労してでも読む価値はあると思います。見所も、神話や神武天皇の東征、崇神天皇などが挙げられると思います。

　神話時代は『古事記』との読み比べが魅力的です。『古事記』では一筋の物語として語られますが、『日本書紀』では、どこが本文なのかわからなくなるくらいたくさんの別伝が記載されていて、微妙な差異など、読んでいて面白いです。

　しかし注目すべきは崇神天皇ではないでしょうか。崇神天皇は祭祀王、三輪王朝(イリ王朝)の祖、神武天皇のモデルなど様々な言われ方をされます。果ては騎馬民族の王で、朝鮮半島から日本に渡ってきたと主張されたりします。しかし、実際の『日本書紀』ではどのように記されているのだろう。まだ知らない人はぜひ確かめてみてください。

『日本書紀』『古事記』のいわゆる「記紀」の解説書から、邪馬台国の存在や大和朝廷の成立など古代日本史を扱った本は数多にあるが、とにかく基礎資料たる『日本書紀』の原文を、全部読み通さなくても、せめて参照できるように手元において置かなければ正確な知識の習得はおぼつかない。岩波文庫のものは原文のままで、非常に詳細な注釈がついているのでとても参考になるだろう。反面、原文なので読むのが難しいから講談社学術文庫の宇治谷孟氏、あるいは中公クラシックスの井上光貞氏の現代語訳もそろえておけば万全だと思う。日本古代史に関心がある人で、専門家や歴史愛好家の書いたものを読むだけで満足しているような人がいるが、まさに自分たちの歴史を学ぶのであるから、きちんと『古事記』『日本書紀』の原典に当たるように心がけてこそ、正確な歴史認識を期すことができる。字が小さいのが気になる方はワイド版の方もお勧めである。

　今でも何故だか不思議に思うが　高校１年生の冬に　一冬かけて日本書紀を読んだことがある。

　古文の勉強のためだったのかもしれないが。

　読んでいて　古代の人々の息遣いが聴こえてきたような印象を持った。話としては　時に荒唐無稽であり　時にはいんちきくさいわけだが　そう思えるのは　その後の１３００年を知っているからだけであって　日本書紀を書いた人たちを批判するのはアンフェアーであると思う。

　日本書紀という歴史書を書くという作業は　当時にしても高度な政治的作業であったと思う。例えば　近年でも大いに論じられてきた教科書問題も　正しく歴史をどう捉えるかという一点に掛かっている。その意味では　日本書紀の作者達と僕らは　今なお　同じ地平線に立っていると言える。

　それにしても７００年代にかような書物が出来たことも大したものだし　何より現在まで残ってくれたことが嬉しい。
