近年、フォルカー・ミヒェルス氏の手によって、これまで中々読むことが出来なかったヘッセのエッセイなどが読めるようになって嬉しい限りです。本書は美しい蝶や蛾の挿絵とともに、蝶に関するエッセイが読めます。収録されている『クジャクヤママユ』は、中学校の国語の教科書に高橋健二さんの訳で『少年の日の思い出』というタイトルで掲載されていました。まだ鮮明に覚えている人も多いのではないでしょうか？この作品は短いながらも非常に均整の取れた傑作短編で、高橋さんは、ヘッセを訪ねた時に新聞か何かに掲載された際のスクラップを受け取り、夢中になって読んだということです。この作品を読むためにだけでも、買う価値があります。

昆虫好きの文学ファンにはたまらない一冊。 そろそろファーブル昆虫記を読み飽きた人におすすめ。余談だが「少年の日の思い出」で悪徳されていた少年が、本作では模範的でいやな奴という表現に変わっていた。
