　J.R.R.トールキンのファンタジーの金字塔と呼ばれる『指輪物語』の「指輪」が発見されたことが明らかにされる物語です。瀬田貞二氏の素晴らしい訳を岩波書店が緻密な見直しをし、数回に渡る改定を行った読みやすい物語になっています。もちろんいつ読んでも楽しめますが、物語の順序に従い、まずは『指輪物語』の前に『ホビットの冒険』読む方がお勧めです。

　オリジナル版なので、トールキンの挿絵が見られる代わりに、寺島竜一の挿絵が見られないのが寂しいです。「愛蔵版と両方買うべし」です。

指輪物語を読む前にと思い購入しました。
話としてはビルボの冒険物語です。指輪がホビットの手に渡るまでの経緯やガンダルフやドワーフの事をより詳しく理解するためにも、指輪物語の前に読んでおくことをおすすめします。実際この物語に出てきた登場人物が指輪物語にも登場したりするので、指輪物語の世界への理解を深める為に是非。
