非線形科学、複雑系、ネットワーク解析などの分野で、何だか期待を抱かせるが、具体的に何ができて何ができないのかが曖昧、という書籍が多い中、本書は正面から非線形科学とは何ものであるかを描きだそうとしている。

第II章は非線形科学の入門編として最高。

第I章は、伝統的自然科学の方法論の限界についての考察として非常に興味深い。第III章は、第I章を踏まえたひとつの挑戦であり提言だが、自然科学のアカデミアが、こうした立場を受け容れていくのか、受け容れていくのならどういう形でなのか、興味は尽きない。

最近のネットワーク関連の研究を「なにも新しい成果はでてこないじゃないか」と物理学の方は言うらしい。しかし、複雑ネットワークを本書で扱われている「非線形科学」の展開の一形態であると考えると、かなり根本から、一般に信じられている「科学的思考」というのは反省を迫られるのではないだろうか？

筆者の言う「述語的な科学」と、筆者の現象に誠実に向き合う姿勢がとても印象に残った。そして、私は、筆者のこうした知こそが関係性＝ネットワーク的思考であると主張したくなる誘惑にかられている。

いずれにせよ、複雑ネットワーク関係を勉強する際、その背景にある物理学的な知見、思考がどのようなテーマをもっているかを学ぶには最適の書物であると思う。

カオス理論、複雑系理論、ネットワーク理論に関する本を読み漁り、
その主張するとことは理解できましたが、
今までの科学とどこがどれだけ異なるのか、どれだけ新たな知見が得られるのか、どれだけ効用があるのか、
についてはなかなか得られるものがありませんでした。

それを本書が見事に解消してくれました。
本書は単に非線形科学の解説本ではありません。

１．科学描写の構造
これまでの科学、すなわち主語的統一（モノの科学）に知識・思考が偏在しており、
それを上手く昇華するには、これからの科学、すなわち述語的統一（コトの科学）を発展させる必要があること、
それを非線形科学が担っていること、を判り易く説明しています。

２．非線形科学から見る自然
その両輪を見定めた上で、非線形科学の基礎を、
カタストロフィ、カオス、フラクタル、複雑系といった、
これまで登場した用語を丁寧に整理して紹介しています。

３．知の不在と現代
更に、知の偏在がもたらす不幸を説き、
これからの非線形科学の発展と、主語的統一と述語的統一を、
上手くバランスさせることが本当の幸福であることまで説いています。

科学を通した世界観を見事に変えてくれる本です。
日本にこれだけ素晴らしい科学者がいることに感動しました。
★５つでは足りません。
