　構文はわかっても文脈に注意しないとついつい誤読してしまうような英文を集めて、こなれた訳文と解説を付したレベルの高い本です。受験英語参考書やTOEIC対策書はもう卒業して、タイムや文学作品を読んでいる人や翻訳家志望者向け。正確に読み訳すために文脈からどのように推論するのか、具体例で示してくれます。

著者である行方昭夫氏は『英語青年』で20年近くも解釈問題の添削を担当しておられ、本著はその集大成とも言える作品である。近年、英語はますます国際語としての様相を帯び、実用性・コミュニケーション重視はもはや避けられない時代の趨勢であるように思える。しかし、看過されがちなのは、リーディングやライティングといった古典的な学習法で重んじられていた技能も、本格的なレベルに到達すればスピーキングと並ぶ実用性、あるいは、このインターネット社会においてはそれ以上の実用性すら秘めている、ということである。表向きの実践主義に左右されて何が大切かを忘れてしまった日本人に、英文読解の巨匠が放つ魂の一作。東大英文精読の伝統が今甦る。

最近、ＩＴ関連と英語上達法ほど愚劣な本ばかりが増え、見る気もしない低レベルの本の氾濫が加速度をますなかで、一点の輝きをもつ絶品です。佐々木高政の英文解釈考を終えたあとで、じっくり読むべきでしょう。中身もよく練れていて、さすが東大英語だとの伝統を感じます。
”英文をいかに読むか”などのはるか上を行きますね。
