4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect but one frustrating problem!, 2009/10/23
By Jen B (Tokyo) - See all my reviews
Pros:

-easy to use: organised as a dictionary, the first half of the book (Japanese to English) allows you to search for japanese keywords in romaji. The keyword is given in romaji and kanji with the definition of the word and then there is a list of idioms containing that word

-each entry in the Japanese to English section is very complete and a great way to practise sentence patterns, pick up new vocabulary and kanji.

Here is the flow of a J>E entry:
Japanese idiom in romaji - the idiom in kanji - the meaning in English - the litteral translation - Example sentence using the idiom, written in kanji - the example in romaji for pronunciation - the English translation.

Cons:

-no litteral translations in the second half of the book (English to Japanese)! This was so frustrating because it's very interesting to know what an idiom literally means; so you have to then pick up another dictionary and anote your book with translation notes...

To get an idea of the problem here is a flow of an E>J entry:

English idiom - japanese equivalent in kanjis - romaji reading of the japanese equivalent - Example sentence of the english idiom in use - translation of the english sentence using the japanese equivalent, in kanji - romaji reading

As you can see, what is missing here is the litteral translation of the japanese equivalent. If you see that "order of the day" is equivalent to "必需品”wouldn't you like to know what that "hitsuju hin" means? I would.

Verdict: I don't regret buying this book, it has still been an excellent addition to my library and served its purpose (adding more vocabulary, kanjis and expressions to my knowledge; allowing me to practise reading etc), and I don't mind the extra work per say, but I did find it frustrating to think that a little, logical adjustment to the book would make using it a breeze.
