アメリカ南部文学最高峰のフォークナー。難解さではノーベル賞受賞のお墨つき。この作品は「ポップ」な方だとは本人の弁で、読んでみるといつもの通りサッパリわからないけど、妙にドロッとした南部らしいブキミさが癖になるとやめられない。

本書はストーリー的には判事の娘にして大学生のTemple Drakeが性的不能患者Popeye率いる犯罪集団にレイプされた上に売春を強要される様と其の事件の皮肉な顛末を描いたもので、W.Faulkner自身「the most　horrific tale I could imagine」と語るほどaggresivenessの目立つ作品です。しかし何よりも重要なことはFaulker自身が本作はカネの為に(しかも僅か3週間で)書いたと認めていることであり、更には彼がNY Timesのインタビューで認めていること、即ち彼が｢作家になりたくて作家になった作家ではなくカネの為に作家になった作家｣であることをも加えて考慮すると、作家Faulkner自身と同じ背景を持つ本作こそが良くも悪くもFauklnerらしさがストレートに表現されている作品であると言えると思います。

~＊「お金のために書いた作品」というフォークナー自身の発言は、額面どおりに受けとらないほうがいいと思います。そんな単純な解釈は成り立たないでしょう。適当に書いた小説かと言えば、それはちがうと思うし、このヴィンテージ版のエディターズノートも、misleadingなコメントだと書いています。
読みこむほどに、いろいろなテーマが噴出してきそうな印象を受~~けました。
＊ところで、一番よく分からなかったのが、VirgilとFonzoという二人の登場人物の、この物語における存在意義です。詳しくフォークナーの研究をしている人に聞いてみたい気がしますが、途中で登場して、物語の大筋とはあまり関係なさそうなのですが、これはどう解釈すればいいのでしょうか？　（よかったら教えてください）
＊ポパイはグロテスクで救~~いようのない人間のようですが、最後の方でちょろっと生い立ちの紹介なんかがあって、かすかに同情を誘うような仕掛けになってますよね。心の中にシコリみたいなものを抱えて、monsterになってしまった運命を読み取れます。
同情してもしょうがないんでしょうけれど、この善悪を超えた人物を創作するところがすごいなーと感心しました。歌舞伎なんかのシテに相~~通じるものがあると、、、
＊他の作品にくらべて、これがいい悪いなんて評価するなんてことが意味を持たない作家だと思います。とにかく、散文としての文章の味わい深さは最高。少し法廷サスペンス調になっているので、（文芸作品ではあるけれど）エンターテイメント的に読ませる物語でもあるのかな？という気がしました。~
