この作品には「これぞフォークナー！」という雰囲気と「これもフォークナー？」という雰囲気が仲良く同居していると思う。亡くなった母親の亡骸を彼女の希望通りに埋葬するために旅立つ父親と３人の息子・娘１人。が、この埋葬の旅はそれぞれにとって全く別の意味があった･･･。南部の文化、人間の本性・醜い部分をも、フォークナーは愛情を込めてブラックユーモアたっぷりに描写している。エピソードや道中のハプニング等も、Yoknapatawphaサーガに触れるにしたがって、後に違った（重要な）意味を持ってくる。が、とりあえずはあまり考える事無く純粋に楽しめる作品。文章も他のフォークナー作品に比べて読みやすいので、フォークナー初心者向けと言ってもいいと思う。
