大映・映像京都が制作した７作品は、版元が角川エンタテインメントに変わり再発売され、お求めやすくなっています。
ただ残念なのはキングレコード旧盤では各巻についていたブックレットが、「犬神家の一族」上巻、及び「八つ墓村」上巻に限られること。

この作品をリアルタイムで見た人たちを、正直羨ましいと思っていましたが、DVDで復活するとは良い時代になりました。
想像以上の豪華さ、そして演じる役者陣の質の高さ、そして映像京都のスタッフの面々たちの妥協してない仕事ぶり(カメラワークや美術セットなど) 、この作品の良さを数え上げたらキリがありません。
今のドラマ制作をしている人たちも、この作品を見習ってほしいものです。

確か映画に先駆けて放映されたと記憶しているが華やかだが大味な市川作品より人間（というより怨念か）がよく描きこまれており、工藤監督の細部にわたるノスタルジックなこだわりと工藤ワールドとでもいうべき陰湿な雰囲気がこのシリーズのトーンを作り上げたといっても過言ではない記念碑的作品。
冒頭の臨終場面の意識が薄れていく中、佐兵衛が過去を回想するシーンでバックに被る『雪の進軍』の印象が強烈。まるで大山元帥の臨終場面を描くかの様な演出には簡素な中にも壮厳さが漂う。
ヒロイン四季乃花恵の微妙な美しさがいかにも工藤監督好みでミステリアス。
重要な舞台装置でありもう一人の主役といっていいほど繰り返し描写される幾何学的な日本家屋や家紋（西岡アートの真髄）が冬の張り詰めた臨場感を引き立てる。
まさに和製ゴスィック・ミステリー。
