内容紹介

公開当時に近いクオリティで、勝新太郎の「座頭市」が鮮やかによみがえる。撮影監督・森田富士郎監修のもと、40年以上に渡り保管されてきたオリジナル・ネガからニュープリントをスクイーズ収録でテレシネした新マスターを使用。さらに、デジタル最新技術を駆使し修復。オリジナルに近い映像が復元された。本作品はカラー作品。

   盲目でヤクザで居合斬りの達人でもある座頭市（勝新太郎）の活躍を描く人気時代劇シリーズ第3作目。故郷に帰って来た市は、彼の剣の師匠である水戸浪士の弥十郎（河津清三郎）の妹・弥生（坪内ミキ子）に求愛されるが、弥十郎はそれを許さない。やがて市は、金に目がくらんで悪事に手を染めていく彼と対決せざるをえなくなっていく。
   監督は本シリーズと並ぶカツシン主演の名物シリーズ『悪名』の生みの親でもある田中徳三。また前2作はモノクロだったが、今回からカラーとなり、大映京都スタッフならではの鮮やかで陰影の濃い色彩美が市の暗く哀しい生きざまを見事に照らし出している。なお、シリーズで市の境遇が色濃く描かれるのは本作までで、第4作『兇状旅』以降は市の超人的活躍ぶりを強調したエンタテインメント映画としての要素が強まっていく。（的田也寸志）

市の師匠の弥十郎なんだけど、なんでこんなに堕落したのか、というところに説得力が不足。彼が悪の道に走るキッカケになったエピソード、堕落した自分に対する自己嫌悪を表すエピソードがちょっとでいいから、ほしかった。

市と対決する弥十郎が１００％悪になってしまったのが、もったいない。善悪抱え持つ複雑なキャラクターに設定したほうが、ずっとドラマとして深くなったはず。

なお、坪内ミキ子は当初足が不自由という設定だったのが、会社側の「新進女優を汚すな」という以降で、脚本を改めざるを得なかった、と犬塚稔は無念そうに語っていた。

確かに市の居合の師匠である河津清三郎の役どころの背景の見えにくさや、
天狗党との関わりの説明不足等、弱い点は幾つかあるものの、それを補って
余りある勝新の名演技・殺陣・そしてダークヒーロー物語の悲しい結末など、
見所満載の作品と言って良いのではないか。

北野何某のリメイク版座頭市なるものを斜め観したが、余りに腹が立ったので

思わずこのＤＶＤ買っちゃいました。結果は、満足満足♪

座頭市は、勝新がパイオニアであると共に完成させてしまった世界観＆
キャラクターとしかいいようがなく、その演技・台詞まわし・殺陣など
他の誰も真似様がないもの、とこのＤＶＤを観て改めて確信しました。

それにしても、「座頭市」に伊福部昭の音楽って、やっぱり良く合うなあ。
