   名シナリオライター倉本聰が、任侠映画の大スター高倉健にエールをおくるべく記した脚本を、降旗康男監督が映画化。裏切り者の兄貴分（池部良）を殺した罪で服役していた加納秀次（高倉健）は、彼の忘れ形見（池上季実子）に「ブラジルの伯父さん」と偽って獄中から養育費を送り続けていた。そして15年の刑期を終えて、出所した彼を待ち受けていたものとは…。
   時代の波に取り残された男の悲哀に「足長おじさん」の要素をミックスし、まさに「その後の任侠」映画といったテイストに貫かれた秀作。健さん映画の常連俳優が勢ぞろいしているのもうれしく、特に無口な板前を演じた小林稔侍は、これが出世作となった。親分（藤田進）が収集しているシャガールの絵に代表される、枯れた淡々とした味わい。クロード・チアリの哀切漂うギターの音色もやるせない。（的田也寸志）

健さんのために書かれた脚本、ヤクザ映画がすたれたのち生まれた優れたヤクザ映画の一本。倉本総の脚本がいい。全編に哀感と悲しみが溢れていますが、あえて男とはいわず、日本人の美学や倫理観のようなものが描かれており、私たちのような世代はいつまでも共感を覚えます。健さんがかっこいいのは言うまでもありません。それはもう語りつくされているといってもよく、私はその他の出演者の魅力を書きたいと思います。まず、なんといっても池部良です。映画の冒頭シーン、暗い海辺、兄貴分の池部良を健さんが組織の命に従って殺すシーン。短い出演時間でした。「なんとかならねか。見逃しちゃくれねーか」無理を知りながら健さんに頼む池部良。娘がいるのです。黙って聞いていた健さんが、ブスっと刺します。たったこれだけのシーンですが、池部良のヤクザは絶品です。東宝の二枚目だった池部良をヤクザに最初に起用したのは松竹の篠田正浩だったと記憶してますが、これが素晴らしかった。この映画でも、このシーンは名シーンと思います。そして、今は亡き小池昭雄の親分が、悪事を働いた後、健さんに殺られる際、同じように「子供がいるんだ。見逃しちゃーけれねえか」と懇願するのですが、ここでも健さんは無言で一気に刺します。このシーンもよかった。懐かしい名画です。これからも見るでしょう。

東映がヤクザ映画路線に迷ってた時期に撮られただけあって、今までの路線と全く違ったヤクザ映画に仕上がってます。
脚本も倉本総だけ在って、どこか暖かさを感じます。
全編に流れるチャイコフスキーのピアノソナタが印象的です。
最後は東映ヤクザ映画のお決まりの結末です（笑
高倉健のファンにはお勧めの映画かも。

ストーリーは単純なのですが、義理やしがらみや人情に逆らえない不器用な
ハマのヤクザである健さんが、自分が背負ったものに耐えている姿に
感動しました。
私のナンバー１のお薦めです。
余談ですが、現在の駅ビルになる前の横浜駅の貴重な姿を見ることも
できます。
