　1980年製作の本作。“sars”やインフルエンザの流行で“virus”については
誰もが知るところとなった今・・・“日本沈没”より更にスケールアップし、
“virus”や“核”“人間の本能”を絡めた世界破滅のおはなしです。
勿論、限られた時間の中でのストーリー展開ですので、？な点はある程度仕方ないでしょう。
しかしながら、極限の人間の有り方をここまで、正面から真摯に問いかける作品は
最近の邦画には少ないのも事実です。丁寧に作っているなぁと思いました。

CG処理になれた私などは、この頃の“全編ロケ”映像にとても惹かれます。
「作品」と呼ぶに相応しいです。まず観てみて損はしません。
ラスト・シーンも賛成です。

米国映画と日本映画では、新聞に例えれば「全国紙」と「地方紙」の格差があった。この溝を埋めるべく、巨匠、深作欣二監督が当時の日本映画に警笛を鳴らすべく、映画化不可能とされていた小松左京氏の小説を見事に映画化。チリ・カナダ両海軍から潜水艦をチャーターしたり、キャストとして「ライフルマン」で有名なチャック・コナーズや、オリビア・ハッセーなどのハリウッドスターを多数投入するなどの妥協無き制作スタンス。世界初の南極ロケという冒険もあいまって、人類の持つ共通の矛盾を見事に描ききった。原作者をも唸らせたこの作品は、深作監督の「今後の日本映画への危機感」なくしては完成し得なかっただろう。このエネルギーを現代映画が反映しているかどうかは個人の価値観にもよるが、観客を無言とさせる問題作であり、私が唯一認める「国境を越えた映画」でもある。

久しぶりに目にとまり、購入してみた。　今から思えば、この映画を境に
角川映画は、衰退の道を、歩み始め、角川アイドル路線に、変更を
余儀なくされた。
ストーリーの評価は、万人によって色々だろうが、ＣＧ全盛の昨今にくらべ
さすがに、本物の迫力は、否めない。
ディーゼル艦とは言え、当時のチリ海軍最新鋭艦だったと、記憶している。
今でも、自衛隊に、親潮級、潜水艦をレンタルしてくれなど、
及びもつかないことだろう、同様に戦国自衛隊の、新作映画も
やはり、自衛隊との折衝に、相当の労力を、傾注したと聞いている。
破天荒な人生を生きた、監督そのもののような映画である。
また、透き通るような、南極の景色と、バックに流れる音楽が、素晴らしい。
撮影の多くは、実は、民家や、ホテルが近くにある、北極圏で、
撮影されたらしいが、南極の景色そのものは、実物であるし、
投入された機材、俳優、資金、どれをとっても、当時は破格の映画だった。
若干の中だるみはあるが、草刈正雄演じる、吉住が、廃墟となった
教会の中、イエスの像に向かい、何もしないなら、そこで、寝ていなさいと
言うセリフの中に、監督の、限りない、人間賛歌を、感じる。
名作？迷作？　
どちらにしても、これほどの日本映画は、もう、出ないだろうと感じる。
