冒頭から売春宿への潜入で始まるこの本は、まるで小説のようである。その臨場感で、タイでの売春の酷い実態が浮き彫りにされている。10歳に満たない少女への売春、暴力、エイズ。そして小児性愛好者の実態……。自身の危険も伴うタイでの売春宿の実態を調査し、怒り悲しむ作者。

学問的ではない。視点も時折冷静さを欠いている。全てを丸呑みにはできない。しかし、読む人の感情を喚起させ問題意識を持たせる一冊だろう。日本の小児性愛好者もわずかながら登場する。話が前後したり、文章が本人のモノローグなので少し読みにくいところもある。

1人の女性が、立ち向かえないほどの現実に立ち向かった記録。

この本は基本的にルポルタージュです。でも、正確ではありません。
著者の心の混乱や葛藤がそのまま出ているからです。

この本に学術書のような正確さは必要ない。生々しい心の動きが、全てを救うことなど不可能だと突きつけられ続けている援助者の苦悩をよく表していると思います。

著者の方には申し訳ないが、こういう発展途上国の売春を止めるとか、
その種の活動をしている人たちって、どうも偽善っぽくって、賞賛する気にはなれなかったんです。

そんな色眼鏡を掛けたまま読んだのですが、彼女は違った。

血で綴った脅迫状を送られたり、家を出るなり、見知らぬ男に暴行受けたり、変ないたずら電話に一晩中悩まされたり。

彼女は、タイの子供を守る活動をするために、こんな恐ろしい目に遭っていたそうです。
口ではいくらでも言えても、ここまで恐怖を体験しても、自分の主張を通せる人って、どのくらいいるだろうか。

彼女は偽善でも、売名行為でもなかった。疑ってごめんなさい。

また、微笑みの国と言われているタイののどかな雰囲気の裏に、
性的搾取される子供の存在も、考えさせられた。
旅行ガイドブックでは、得られないタイの姿をこの本で見た。
