ゴッホの生地ズンデルト（オランダ南部）、父親が牧師として赴任することになったヌエネン（オランダ南部）、画の勉強のために住んだパリはモンマルトル、明るい色彩を求めたアルル（フランス南部）、そして精神病治療のために移り住み、生涯を閉じたサン・レミ・ド・プロヴァンスといった土地が写真で紹介されている。その中には、印象派画家であるゴッホの生涯とその作品も織り込まれている。ゴッホその人と作品を知るには大変参考になり、かつ興味深い本であった。画家として常に自らの絵とともに生きたゴッホと彼に生涯にわたり献身的に協力した弟のテオの物語は感動の涙なくしては読めないものである。

ゴッホが生きた土地を紹介するとともに、その土地で彼がどの様に生き、どの様な作品を残したかを解かり易く解説してくれている。

彼が画家として目覚め、影響を受け、土地を移り住んでいく。
その土地土地で影響を受け、彼自身も変化し、画風も同様に変化していく。

アルルの土地での彼の象徴である『ひまわり』。そして、死が間近に迫ってきているのを予感させるサン・レミでの『糸杉』。
生命の象徴である『ひまわり』と死の象徴である『糸杉』。

彼の作品と、実際の風景を観ることによって、ゴッホへの興味が一段と強くなりました。
