本巻はいわゆるTV版、映画版では語られることの無かった、ガンダムの前日譚です。
演説中に倒れ、帰らぬ人となったジオン・ズム・ダイクン。
遺児のキャスバルとアルテイシアはその後どんな過酷な運命をたどるのか・・・？
ファーストファンなら知らずには置けない「語られる前の物語」が紐解かれます。
幼い頃のシャアはどんな少年だったのか？
なぜ復讐鬼として爪を研ぐことになってしまったのか？
そもそもダイクンの遺児という立場に在りながら、何故シャアを名乗り、ジオン軍に潜り込めたのか？
セイラはなぜサイド６に居る事になったのか？
「青い巨星」ランバ・ラルの若い頃の活躍と挫折とは？
そしてハモンとの馴れ初めは？
タチという若い兵士の事を貴方はご存知でしたか？
ザビ家は始めは４兄弟だった?!
じゃあ後の一人はどこへ?!
１年戦争の発端となった１週間戦争はどんな戦場だったのか？

見応え抜群!!
後書きは安彦先生が「前日譚３部作」を描くようになったきっかけをご自身で書かれています。

無関係な巻末マンガ、そして無遠慮な帯文。

日本漫画は世界でも独自の文化である。

善し悪しは別として首相が自ら「マンガ大使」に立候補するような日本になったが、それでもマンガ＝子供の読み物と思っている人も少なからずいるのではないだろうか？

日本人は、とかく日本発のものへ対する評価が極端に低い…。
ノーベル賞に選ばれて、初めて注目されるようになった学者や、アカデミー賞を受賞したとたんにリバイバル公開で満席になる映画、はたまた逆輸入するとプレミアがつく時計など…。
全部、日本発なのに海外を経由すると評価が高まるという現象にある。
外国で人気が出るとハリ○○ッ○ーなど実は面白くもない小説までも飛ぶように売れるという「裸の王様」国民となってしまった。

黒船や敗戦のショックから未だに抜け出せないのかと思ってしまう。

芥川賞受賞！などの触れ込みがあると一気に売れる小説だが、言葉遊びだけで内容が希薄な小説が妙に有り難がられている。
本作品は発行部数ではハリー○ッ○ーなどには遙かに及ばないが、内容では並の小説ならば遙かに凌駕している。

特にアニメーター出身の安彦氏の画は躍動感に溢れ、静止画であるにも関わらず動画の画面の一ショットを画にしたような見事さがあり、画一枚一枚が芸術作品のようにも感じる。

綿密な心理描写やストーリー、そして見事な設定など…どれをとっても超一級。

巻末の別作家によるマンガは「いらない…」と思うが、安彦氏がそれを認めているのだから良いのだろう。
