セルフプロデュースだということが一発でわかるアルバムです。
良く言えば、楽しんで作ったのがわかる。
悪く言えば、シマリがない。

MUSEが「楽しんでやりたい放題やったらこうなりました」という曲集だと思って聴くと良いです。前作の勢いのままに今回も突っ走るだろうと思って聴くと、まず間違いなく肩透かしを食らってがっかりします。

やはりMUSEなので、一曲一曲の質は文句なしに高いです。しかし歌詞の内容、歌い方など遊びの度が過ぎて聴いているほうが恥ずかしくなるくらい「わざとらしい」曲も多いのは否定できません。そして、メンバーがスタジオで大笑いしている姿が容易に想像できる「お約束」的なアレンジも多々あります。

Matt の大袈裟な性格がそのまんま前に出て大袈裟なアルバムになってます。彼はこのアルバムに関してのインタビューで「ベルリオーズやオルフのクラシック音楽に比べたら自分達がやってるロックなんて穏やかなもんだよ」と言ってましたが、大仰さでは引けを取っていません。

グルーブ感の良い曲や、ライブで映えそうな曲もちゃんと入っていますが、ハードでヘビーな曲が好きな人は物足りなく感じるかもしれません。今までの作品より音の密度が低いというか、クリーンな感じです。

衝撃度も即効性も低いですが、何度か繰り返して聴くとかなり秀逸な作品であることがわかります。でも、そこまで聴き込む前に期待ハズレだと諦めてしまう人も多いと思うので、それが残念ですね。

約3年のスパンでリリースされた5thアルバム。前作で大々的に取り込まれたシンセ/ストリングス/コーラスは今作でさらにそのポピュラリティを増しまして響き、各所でモロに散りばめられる「クラシック」なフレーズと相まって、よくも悪くも従前になく「コチラ側」な存在に感じられる。

凡庸になった、とは全く思わんが、「超絶」の上書きを続けてきたようなこれまでと比べると、今作で随分とコチラ寄りになった「美学」にはやや磨きの物足りなさも感じたり。まんまQUEENな熱唱が拡がる"United States Of Eurasia"、同じく「スタジアム級」の歌とギターが飽和する"Guiding Light"、映画のサントラめいたファンタジックなストリングスが映画のサントラめいた景色を浮かべる組曲風のラスト3トラックなどなど、なにせ基本のパーツが好きなので惹かれずにはおれんのだが、そういうコチャコチャしたこと言わせんぐらいに「スゲー！」と唸らす、「ヤリ過ぎだろ！」と呆れるほどに圧倒する、そんな分厚い凄みがもちっと欲しかったなーというのが正直なところ。

アレンジがどんどん過剰になっていく一方、曲自体が良く言ってポップに悪く言って陳腐になって来ているかも。初期の曲が好きな人にとっては少し残念。
でも音楽性の変化といえばそれまでだし、アルバムの完成度はかなり高い。
これからさらにビッグ・バンドになっていくんだろうと予見させられるアルバム。

　ミューズの初期のアルバムも好きですが、これはこれで今までにない感じで楽しめます。特にさいしょの２曲が壮大な感じで好き！１・２曲目の始まりが刺激的で好きです。
