2009 release, Skillet's eighth studio album, Awake, recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson. The foursome's overwhelmingly satisfied with the entire sonic and thematic palette throughout Awake, which is loaded with plenty of anthems in the making destined to be smash singles and concert sing-a-longs. Skillet's massive fan base (who affectionately refer to themselves as "Panheads") are sure to agree, though they'll likely be even more impressed with the lyrical outpouring, which remains a top priority for the players. The album contains 12 tracks, including 'Monster' which were added to their live set during their Comatose Tour, and the single 'Hero'.

5.0 out of 5 stars 名作「Comatose」から3年ぶりの8th, 2009/9/18
メジャーレーベル移籍後2枚目、通算8枚目のスタジオアルバム。
ヘヴィロック／エモ界の敏腕Producer、Howard Benson氏を起用。
本作からdrumsがJen Ledger嬢(若干19歳！)に変わっているが、男x2、女x2のバンド編成は変わっていない。
現メンバーは次の通り。
John Cooper - lead vocals, bass
Korey Cooper - rhythm guitar, keyboard, backing vocals
Ben Kasica - lead guitar
Jen Ledger - drums, backing vocals
ちなみにJohnとKoreyは夫婦であり、ほとんどの曲をCooper夫妻で制作。

サウンド面ではそれほど大きな変化はなく、メロディアスなオルタナ/ポストグランジ路線は前作同様である。それぞれの楽曲のクオリティは高く、本作も前作同様に捨て曲がない。
全体的に前作よりキャッチーになった印象で、これはProducerのHoward Benson氏の手腕によるところが大きいかもしれない。何曲かThree Days Graceのサウンドに似た曲があるが、Howard Bensonと組んだ結果だろう。（Howard Benson氏はThree Days Grace「One-X」をProduceしている）

現在、国内盤の発売予定はないが、US輸入盤には以下のBonus Truck3曲入りのLimitedEditionと通常盤があるので注意が必要である。

(13)はSymphonic/Gothic Rock系の曲(14)はバラード、(15)は(2)の[Radio Edit]。(13)、(14)のBonus Truckはアルバムの他の楽曲に引けを取らない出来であり、特に(13)はSkillet節が炸裂している佳曲である。前作1曲目"Rebirthing"が好きならツボの作品で、本作においてSymphonic/Gothic Rock系の曲が少なくなった分、Skilletファンにはぜひチェックしてほしい。
これから購入するなら迷わずLimitedEditionを買った方がよい。
なお、Billboardアルバムチャートで2位を記録した。(前作は55位が最高位)

前作『COMATOSE』がアメリカで大ヒットし、新世代アメリカン・ロックの象徴となりつつあるskillet待望の新作。
前作はスケールの大きなサウンドへの変貌で成功しましたが、本作はメロディに重点を置いた作品です。
とにかく１曲目の「HERO」と２曲目の「MONSTER」がヤバいっす。
ＳＦアクション映画の最後に流れてきたら鳥肌モンです。
そのほかにも、いかにも彼ららしいミドル・ナンバーや、大合唱間違いなしの「One Day Too Late」「Don't Wake Me」・「Should've When You Could've」など、力強さの中にも優しさに満ちた楽曲が満載です。
ただ、欲を言えばライブがとてつもなくカッコイイ彼らなだけに、もう少しライブ向けのタフでロックな曲を欲しかったです。
歌える曲ばかりで、聴いていて飽きませんがね。

しかし、いいかげん日本盤をリリースしてほしいものです。
そして来日してください！

表題の通り、このアルバムの評価は難しいと思う。
曲調は前のアルバム「Comatose」そのままに、女性のかけ声・バイオリンといった「メインストリームではあまり見られない」要素を排除したものとなっている。
ありきたりな表現を使えば、「普通の音楽」になったのである。

だから評価が難しい。
ド派手な前作と比べると落ち着いた曲調が多く、そのかわりにしっとりしたギターサウンドなどを聴かせる曲が多い。
「Comatose」とその前の「Collide」は曲の勢いで視聴者の心をつかもうとしていたものが殆どだったが、今回のアルバムはラジオのBGMなどに使っていけるトゲのない感じになっている。
ただ、よくよく聞いてみるとSkilletらしさのある緩急のついたメロディなんかは健在だ。
こうした変化を進化とみるか、スランプと見るかは人によって感じ方は違うだろう。
ひとつだけ言えることは、バンドとしてはわざとこのような方向性に振っていることだ。

曲作りは進歩したが、それが人の心をつかむかどうかは別だ。
だから評価をつけるのが難しい。
個人的にはこのアルバムは聴きやすくて好きなんだけれども、アメリカのアマゾンでたくさん投下されている酷評レビューの言いたいことはよく分かる。

あとドラムの人は変わったが、実力は問題ないと思う。
