ソフォクレスのギリシャ悲劇「オイディプス王」の映画化作品。
コリントスの青年オイディプスは、母と交わり父を殺す、という神託を得る。
予言を恐れた彼は、故郷を捨て、荒野をさまよううちライオス王と出会う。
そのライオス王こそ、オイディプスの真の父親であった…。
母のイオカステと結ばれたオイディプスが、真実を知って自らの両目をえぐるまでを、
格調高い映像美で描くパゾリーニ監督の問題作。

◆ピエル・パオロ・パゾリーニ
1922年3月5日イタリア・ボローニャ出身。
詩人、小説家として名声を得たのち、1961年「アッカートネ」で監督デビュー。
「奇跡の丘」(1964年)でヴェネチア映画祭カソリック映画事務局賞を受賞。他受賞作多数。
1975年11月2日、「ソドムの市」エキストラ役で同性愛関係にあった少年により惨殺された。

近年、村上春樹氏の「海辺のカフカ」でもモチーフにつかわれた
古典悲劇です。「オイディプス・コンプレックス」との心理学用語
でも有名な話です。それを、当時世界の最高峰たる表現者として
数々の問題作を世に問うていた監督が原作に沿って映画化しました。
プロローグ、本編、エピローグと、場面が現代と古代ギリシアに
移り変わりますが、なんの違和感もなくストーリーが連続してい
くことに、ありあまる才気を感じます。
もう個々のシーンが突き抜けています。ＣＧ技術は「文明」ですが
表現手段たる「文化」は最新の文明技術を前にしても、なんら古さを
感じないことに今更ながら驚かされます。

5.0 out of 5 stars ＥＤＩＰＯ　ＲＥ（アポロンの地獄という名の）真の芸術作品, 2009/8/14
この映画は17のとき（1970）、がらがらの海に近い映画館で見ました。10年ほど前渋谷のユーロスペースでパゾリーニ特集の際、なんだかつまらなそうな様子のの若い人たちに混じって見ました。この真の芸術映画立ち会える人は（日本では）ＤＶＤも高価で取引をされていて、一握りの選ばれた人だけだたのですが、ニューマスター版がでて買いやすくなってもそれは変わらないでしょう。まず音楽がすばらしい、ケチャ、日本のお神楽,ロマの演奏、等等・・・当時ロックが映画に使われて話題になっていたころに、はるかかなたの音楽世界を荒れ果てた乾燥地帯（モロッコでのロケ）の風景と古代ギリシャ、テーベのエディス王の血の臭いが連想させられる。そしてさすが６０’のイタリア、とにかくアクセサリーと衣装のすばらしさはすべてを被い尽くしています。この映像芸術に立ち会える幸福に選ばれた一人であることをパゾリーニに感謝したい。

　何しろ過激でスキャンダラスとしか思えない生涯だったパゾリーニ。
彼の作品は、これが初見でしたが、これほど正攻法の作品とは思いませんでした。原作の姿を尊重しつつ、より、素朴に、オイディプス自身の暴力性が描かれる。セリフも極端に短く、「映画」として成り立っていることを実感できる。
　イオカステもその表情と色香で充分な存在感。
　オープニングとエンディングが現代に移っているが、「奇をてらう」感はなく、納得させられる。
　モロッコでのロケだったと聞く長い道のりや城、占い師やスフィンクスの存在は土着的で、物語をよりシンプルに浮き立たせる。
　「奇跡の丘」も、観た方がいいかな・・・・と思っています。
