Yo La Tengoも新作「Popular Songs」はタイトル通りポピュラーであった。
彼らのサウンドを例えることは難しい。
サウンドは至ってシンプルではあるが、心に沁みてくる。都会的でありながら牧歌的でもあり、どこか懐かしさもある。ヴォーカルはとても透明感があり美しく優しい。
敢て言うならばWilcoのサウンドに近いのかもしれない。＃5「Periodically Double Or Triple」はとても親しみやすい曲で、聴いている方も思わず体が揺れてしまう。終盤の＃11と＃12はともに10分を越える曲で、壮大な組曲のようだ。
決してコマーシャリズムに陥る事無くリスナー-に媚びることもなく、このバンドが永きに渡りミュージックシーンで活躍できるアメリカの音楽シーンは、やはり懐が深いものだと感心してしまった。こういうサウンドほど、一人で大音量（許されるなら）で聴きたいものだ。

yo latengoらしい抒情的であったり、popなメロディーは今回のアルバムでも健在です。
一番衝撃だったのは#4「Nothing To Hide」、sugarcubeを彷彿とさせる歪んだギターのリフに、どこか力の抜けた歌でなぞるキャッチーなメロディーラインが最高に良い。
この一曲だけでも素晴らしいんですが、アルバム全体を通しての流れ、一体感もすばらしい。
静かな曲と激しい曲とのんびりした曲とバラエティに富んでいる中で、非常にバランスのいい曲構成になっています。
文句なしに、いままでyo latengoが好きだった方は買いですし、初めてyo latengoを聴く方にもおすすめできるアルバムです。

結成２５周年。アルバムを出すたび成長し進化していくバンドはこのバンドの他に思い当たらない。
このバンドの音楽を表すのは難しい。メジャーな音でもないし、かと言ってマイナーな感じでもない。ロックありギターノイズありサイケありポップあり。
「現代のヴェルヴェット・アンダーグランド」と言うと簡単だけどヴェルヴェットより身近に感じられる音像。
鳴ってほしい時に鳴ってほしい音が鳴ってくれて忘れられないフレーズがどんどん出てくる。何回も曲を戻して聴きたくなる音像達。
アルバム後半の１０分以上のアンビエント調の曲が素晴らしい。爆発しそうでしない異様なテンション。自由すぎる。
今作は歌詞も素晴らしいので日本盤を勧めます。
