ブラームスは、近年、従来の先入観に見直しを迫る個性的な演奏が次々出ている。ブラームス時代のオケを参考にした小編成のモダン・オケによるベルグルンド/COE盤や、現在進行中のピリオド・オケによるガーディナー/ORR盤等だ。

そこでこの全集だが、ここで、ラトルは、対向配置などブラームスの音楽の本来の姿を意識しながら、全体としてはむしろやや遅めのテンポで響きも華麗になりすぎないよう抑え気味にしつつ強奏では大迫力をきかせて、ベルリン･フィルの見事な技量とパワーを基に、ブラームスの音楽の精妙な美の表現と深ぶかとした響きの雄大な演奏を両立させようとしている。そして、それは、ＨＱＣＤの抜けが良く低音もクリアかつ豊かに響く高音質のおかげもあって、高度なレヴェルで実現されている。

ただ、こうした折衷的なアプローチは、様々な立場から不満も出るかもしれない。たとえば、もっと明確に従来と異なる新鮮なブラームスを聴きたい人には、前出のベルグルンド盤やガーディナー盤が良いだろうし、逆に遅めのテンポの雄大な演奏なら、バーンスタインやジュリーニのウィーン・フィル盤も良い。（フルトヴェングラーは録音状態が違いすぎるので別扱いとしても。）また、個々の曲では、たとえば、第１番冒頭で、ヴァント/ＮＤＲＳＯ盤などの管がうなり緊迫感あふれる速いテンポの演奏が好みの人には、このラトル盤は少々物足りないかもしれない。第４番では、やはりＣ．クライバー/ウィーン・フィル（ＳＨＭ−ＣＤ）盤の魅力は抗しがたく思われる。

このラトル盤は、なにか突出した個性を持つというよりも、どの曲もどの要素でも比較的高得点という演奏で、フルトヴェングラーの時代、カラヤンの時代、ピリオド・アプローチの隆盛などを経て、それらを取り込んだ現代のブラームス演奏として、一つのスタンダードとなりうる高水準の全集と言ってよいかもしれない。

それにしても、この値段で高音質ＣＤだけでなく全曲ＤＶＤ付とは驚きだ。それも加味して星５つ。

様々なブラームス全集がある中でも、この全集は歴史に残る名演だと思う。
ラトルの解釈とベルリンフィルの演奏とが一体になっている。
ラトルならではの新しい解釈と従来の伝統が上手くマッチしている。
音質もかなり良く、長くバイブルにしたい全集である。

DVD付きだと、オケがどういう演奏スタイルでやっているのかを確認できるいい機会となります。なので今のベルリンフィルとラトルがどうしたいのかを知れてよかったです。
曲の解釈は人それぞれ。ラトルを否定するほど私は偉くないので、すんなり受け入れて楽しめましたよ。
