内容紹介

GRAPEVINEの10枚目となるフルアルバムです。
プロデュースは長田進(Dr.StrangeLove)さんです。長田さんのプロデュースは2005年(シングル「その未来/アダバナ」アルバム「deracine」)から始まりましたが、今年3月にはジョイントツアー「GRAPEVINE with 長田進(from Dr.StrangeLove) 」も行われるなど、より深い関係となってきました。レコーディングの様々な局面で長田さんから発せられる大胆な提案により、多くの化学反応が生まれました。もうひとつ今回の作品に大きな影響を与えたと思われるのが、初の海外公演です。今年のGRAPEVINEはアメリカテキサス州で行われたロックフェスティバル「SXSW(サウスバイサウスウエスト)09」への参加、ニューヨークでのライブなど初となる海外公演を経験しました。
今回のアルバムは、初の英語詞による楽曲( Vex)、バンドサウンドではなくストリングスが積極的に導入された楽曲(Twang)など、これまでになくカラフルでバラエティに富んだ作品となっています。メンバーのデモテープから緻密なアレンジを組み立てていった、渡米前にレコーディングされた6曲と、恒例となったセッションによる曲作りから生まれた、渡米後のレコーディングによる6曲が好対照を成し、さらなる「音楽的進化」が感じられる作品となっています。

GRAPEVINE1年ぶりのニュー・アルバム「Twangs」。

ここ数作のバインは緩やかな変化を遂げていたように思う。
成熟したサウンドと、必要以上に若々しくしない、等身大のエッセンスの増加。
それにより今までには無い渋い雰囲気と重みのあるグルーヴが効いた、よりディープな作品を生み出すバンドとして認知されてきた節がある。

この「Twangs」もその延長線上にある作品である。
若々しさを匂わせつつも歌の腰は強い「疾走」、洋邦の垣根を飛び越えた初の英詩ロック「Vex」、
初期らしさも混ぜ合わせたグッド・メロディが光る「Darlin'from hell」、ねじれたバンドグルーヴにぐいぐい引っ張られる「Turd and swine」、
ポップな歌モノ「小宇宙」、これぞバイン！といえるような言葉遊びが面白い「NOS」。
前半もサラッと聴けていいですが、個人的には後半からのポップの連発がこのアルバムの肝だと思った。

ふと聴き終えて思ったのは、一本の映画を観た後のようだな、と。
1枚のアルバムの中で様々なドラマや景色、移ろいがあり、聴き手を飽きさせない大人のもてなしを感じる楽曲群、曲順になっていて。
全体的に乾いたサウンドアプローチになっているのも何度もじっくり聴ける要因になっていると思います。


そして確かにGRAPEVINEは大人になった。これが完成形だというのも間違いじゃないと思う。
しかし今作ではそれと同時にところどころから少年の匂いもした。
達観の一歩手前で留まっている気がして。
それが初期からのファンとして、なんだか無性に嬉しかったのです。そんな10枚目。

ふと学生時代に好きだったgrapevineを思い出し、彼らの最近の作品を聴き漁ったのですが、えらいカッコ良くてもうビックリ！デビュー当時から既に完成されてるイメージがあったけど、あんなの序の口だったんですね。彼らがこんなにも成熟し、そして何よりも進化し続けているということに心から感動しました！作品のどれを取っても完璧なまでにカッコいいです。これぞ本物。今、日本で一番カッコいいロックバンドだと思います。

みんなの熱いレビューを見て私も書きたくなりました(笑)
バインのアルバムは、いつも進化して、新しい取り組みがあって、驚かされます。
正直、１０年以上ものキャリアのバンドでこんなに意欲的に音楽を探究してるって、すごい！！
でもやっぱりバインであり、遊び心もあり、田中さんは相変わらず細いし（違うか？）
私的には、アメリカ帰りで録ったという後半がスゴクいい！
肩の力が抜けて、また世界が広がった感じ。
ほんとに、バインについていって間違いはない！(笑)
