APOGEE1年半ぶりのニュー・アルバム「夢幻タワー」。
タワレコで限定発売されたシングル「スプリング・ストレンジャー」もそのままのアレンジで収録されている。全10曲。

今回はナチュラルなアルバムである。1stのような革新性や2ndのような壮大な陶酔感はなく、
ありのままを見せ付けるかのような、ある意味「等身大のアルバム」と言えるしれない。
取り合えず以前までの強烈な独自性を期待して聴くと少し肩透かしをくらうかも。

特に前述の「スプリング・ストレンジャー」にそれが強く表れている。
ギターがまず前に出てこず、アレンジも実に素朴、歌に関してはキリンジを彷彿させるほどの穏やかさを感じる。
　最も、この曲ほど他の曲がまったりしている訳ではないが、それでもどの曲も素朴な印象が強い。
異空間的な陶酔感もそこまでではないし、バンドとしての記名性も強くは無い（もちろん今までと比べれば、ですが）。

しかし持ち前のグッドメロディは健在。「Star Honey」では「かわせ」という合図とともに
一気にメロディが溢れ出し気持ちいい高揚感を受ける。
「ゆりかご」「1、2、3」など幅広い層にアピール出来るメロディーラインを奏でているのも面白い変化である。
　かと思えば「絵描きの絵空事」「Heart of Gold」等以前にも通じるトランス感の強い楽曲もしっかり収録されているのも好印象。

「Touch in Light」という大傑作、あそこまでの音空間を味わった後だと多少物足りなく感じるかもしれない。
個人的にも少しそう思う部分がある。
しかしそれでも一つの作品としては高水準だし、これはこれで親しみやすくていいかもしれない。
変化というよりは、元々の姿はこれなんだ、という感じの素の部分が多く出ている、そんなアルバムだと思いました。

APOGEEさんのサードアルバム。実は1st、2ndとも未聴なので、過去からの作風の変化については分からないのですが、トラック2「スプリング・ストレンジャー」のPVをテレビで見ていっぺんで気に入りました。キリンジの作風にちょっと近いかなと思ったけど、それだけではないもっと不思議で幻想的な独特の味わいが大変魅力的。メロディが秀逸なトラック7「1,2,3」、トラック1「Star Honey」、それと何気ない転調が印象的なトラック6「Slowmotion」が個人的に好きです。
WOWOWの「RO15」という番組でのインタビューで、シンセサイザーの大城さんが本作について「ヘッドホンでガン聞きしなくても、流して聴ける」と語っていましたが、最初から最後まで実に気持ちよく音の世界に浸れます。
それにしても「1,2,3」のPVを一度観てしまうと、曲を聴くたびにあの下半身ダンスが頭の中を回って離れなくなって困ります（笑）。

今回はあまりに面白みがないというか、工夫がなさすぎやしませんか。
ひねくれていて引っかかりのあるメロディが持ち味（少なくとも俺はそう思っています）のはずなのに、どれもこれも安直に過ぎる。
メロディ自体は質素なものが多いんですが、シンセに関しては明らかに過度装飾でしょう。バランスがとれていなくて、歌と音が分離してしまっています。
結果、シンセがただキレイな音を出しているだけで印象的なフレーズもなく、バンドとしての音楽があまり感じられませんでした。
ポップになったというよりは、ただ一曲一曲が薄味になっただけ。心底がっかりしました。
