ストーンズはこのアルバムで音のイメチェンを図った。ストーンズのバンドとしての音を形容して「スカスカの音」という言い方があるが、そのイメージはこのアルバム以降である。もともと音がクリアなアルバムであるが、今回のリマスターでさらに音が生々しくなった。もともと音が良いアルバムがリマスターでさらに良くなるんだからあまり面白くない。

ミック・テイラー脱退後であるので、次のギタリストのオーディションも兼ねてレコーディングされた作品である。このアルバムのレコーディング中にジミー・ペイジに頼まれてミック・ジャガーは１日だけスタジオを明け渡した。ツェッぺリンの「プレゼンス」はこれで完成した。

オープニングの「Hot Stuff」。やけに乾いた音色のキースのカッティングが新時代を宣言する。ファンキーながら渋い名曲。のたうち回るようなソロギターはハービー・マンデル。

個人的には大好きなグルーヴィーな「Hand of Fate」。味わい深いソロギターはウェイン・パーキンス。個人的にはこの人にメンバーになって欲しかった。

のほほんとした原曲をストーンズ流にざらつかせるレゲエ・カバー「Cherry Oh Baby」。これぞストーンズの料理法。圧巻！

レゲエを一味ひねったリズムで聴かせる「Hey Negrita」。あけっぴろぎながら構成は練られている。

ファイナルは「Crazy Mama」。締めにふさわしくまさにクレイジー！ベースはキースで、ビル・ワイマンはお役御免（よくあることよ）。

７６年発表。ファンの間では意外な人気盤。ミック・テイラーの急な脱退を受けて、録音自体が新ギタリスト探しとなったいわくつきの作品。Ｊ・ベック、Ｐ・フランプトンなどが噂されたが、最終的に加入したロン・ウッドを除けば、クレジットされたギターは、元キャンド・ヒートのハービー・マンデルとマッスル・ショールズ・スタジオのセッション・ギタリストだったウェィン・パーキンスとなんとも地味な２人（しかし貢献は大）。一方キーボード陣はビリー・プレストンとニッキー・ホプキンスの豪華陣容（ビリーはほぼメンバーといってもよい位大活躍）。
全体にソウル感覚あふれる味わい深い作りでクオリティは高い。まずは冒頭の１、ご機嫌なストーンズ流ミディアム・ファンク・チューン。続いては２、有名曲ではないが、いかしたリフのＲ＆Ｒナンバー、素晴らしいソロはパーキンス。４、７はともに胸きゅんソウル・バラードで、感傷的なメロディの名曲４はミックがピアノ、キースがエレピ（サビでは歌も）、ビリーがストリング・シンセという珍しい３キーボード布陣で、ジャズっぽさを感じさせるギターはマンデル。このアルバムから唯一のシングル・カットだった佳曲７は、ミックのエレピとファルセット・ヴォーカルでしっとりと聴かせる。その他、脱力系レゲエ・カバー３、洒落た４ビートに乗ってミックとビリーがデュエットする６等どの曲も魅力溢れる。。
アルバム・タイトルは、なぐられたあざを意味し、さしずめ｢黒たん青たん｣、ジャケ写は久し振りのシンプルなポートレイトで、旧LPおよびCD紙ジャケ盤では折ると背の位置にちょうどミックの右目の瞳が来る。またオリジナル盤では中袋の曲目表が１６トラック・レコーディングのパート配置表を兼ねていて楽しめる（本盤では未確認）。
