1922年3月5日イタリア・ボローニャ出身。

「奇跡の丘」(1964年)でヴェネチア映画祭カソリック映画事務局賞を受賞。他受賞作多数。
1975年11月2日、「ソドムの市」エキストラ役で同性愛関係にあった少年により惨殺された。

5.0 out of 5 stars パゾリーニの描いたキリスト受難, 2009/5/8
１９６４年の制作でありながらキリストの思想と受難を扱った映画の中でも出色の作品。例えばメル・ギブソンの『パッション』では過激なまでの流血シーンを見せつけるが、では何故それほどまでに彼が迫害されなければならなかったかという理由については説得力を欠いている。あの作品では残念ながら、ハリウッド映画の悪い面が露呈されている。結局大金をかけて巧妙に創られた見世物でしかない。我々はピラニアではないのだ。大量の血を見せつけて多くの人の注意を惹くことには成功したかも知れないが、キリストの教えの本質を曖昧にして、主題を逸らせてしまっている。それに対してパゾリーニはまさにそこに力を注いでいるのだ。エルサレムに入城したキリストは腐敗し、形骸化したユダヤ・パリサイ派の僧侶達を徹底的に弾劾し、糾弾する。その煽動的で挑発的とも言える説法の力強さは感動的だ。こうした彼の行動がパリサイ派を中心とする多くのユダヤ人の感情を逆撫でし、恐れを抱かせ、最終的に彼を磔刑に追い込んでしまう過程が明瞭に理解できる。映画の作り方は至って素朴で、登場人物のセリフは総てマタイ福音書からそのまま採られているが、それだけにまた非常に示唆的だ。しかも白黒である為にかえって鑑賞者の注意を物語の主題から逸らすことなく、一貫したトーンで受難の逸話が展開する。無神論者であったパゾリーニだが、キリストの生き様には強い共感を持っていたに違いない。

私はこの映画を観たあと、キリスト教徒になろうかとさえ思いました。もし人をキリスト教徒にしたい人がいたら、この映画をみせるのが一番効果的ではないでしょうか。
まあ結果的にはならなかったわけですが、それくらいの傑作だってことです。
