1987年に初登場した『魂斗羅』生誕20周年を記念して、ニンテンドーDSで『魂斗羅 Dual Spirits』が発売される。『魂斗羅』は横スクロールのアクションゲームで、本作もその流れを汲んでいる。「Easy」、「Normal」、「Hard」の3段階の難度が用意されており、アクションビギナーからアクションを極めた熟練者まで誰もが楽しめるのがシリーズの特徴だ。もちろん、ニンテンドーDSならではの仕掛けも満載。2画面(デュアルスクリーン)を使ったステージや迫力のボスバトルは、まさに新世代の『魂斗羅』にふさわしい出来上がりだ。本編クリア後に出現するチャレンジステージは合計で40。チャレンジステージをクリアすると、『魂斗羅』シリーズ歴代タイトルのスクリーンショットなどが手に入る。さらに、米ファミコン版の名作『魂斗羅』と『スーパー魂斗羅』が遊べるようになる。

DS史上屈指の難易度と、ユーザーに媚びない昔気質のゲーム性で、北米で絶賛された名作がついにベストでカムバック!
日本でも一部のACTマニアから絶大な支持のある本作。DSで本気のACTがやりたいならこれ。

難易度が高い高いと言われる本作だが、実は努力すれば誰でもクリア出来るように調整されている。
魔界村のような『ここから全く先に進めない』という部類の難易度ではない。
何度も死んで、少しずつ前に進む。この過程が合わない人には合わないのだろう。

かつてのACTゲーマー達が持っていた、『諦めない心』を、このゲームは思い出させてくれる。

２画面をフルに使ったイベントやボスが登場し、テンポよく進めるシューティングアクションで、初期の魂斗羅の雰囲気を踏襲した内容でした。

ただ、擬似３Dのステージは比較的簡単なのですが、２Dステージの内容はイージーですら弾数が多く、また縦スクロールの場合、上から下の画面に表示される弾道を追うことが難しく感じました。

また、ノーマルだと通常弾ではなかなか破壊できない兵器が出てきたりして、その場所だけで何人も死んでしまいがちでした。

ですが理不尽な攻撃はほとんどないので、武器のパワーアップを維持したまま進められるという腕に自信のある方ならノーマル・ハードでもクリアできると思います。

また、イージーをクリアした後に登場するチャレンジモードという「課題をクリアするショートモード」のアイデアそのものは評価でき、この面に挑戦することでメインゲームの練習にもなりますが、「銃なしでひたすら逃げる」とか「ムダ弾を抑える」といった面は手ごわかったです。

総合的にみて、魂斗羅としては正統派だと思いますが、アクションゲームとしてはノーマルの難易度がもう少し低ければ評価が高かったです。

ただ、ドット絵の良さを久々に感じたと同時に「DSでもこんなに硬派なゲームがあるのかあ」と改めて感じることができました。

完全に敵の配置と攻撃パターン、マップを覚えて最適なルートやタイミング、武器の切り替えなどしっかり攻略法を練らないと絶対にクリアできない歯ごたえ十分な「覚えゲー」アクションです。
最初は即死の連続、コンテニュー切れでゲームオーバーばかりですが、40のステージから成るチャレンジモードで練習すればメキメキ上達出来ます。
やりこめばやりこむほど敵のパターンやマップの完成度の高さに唸らされます。
ファミコンに移植された2タイトルもプレイ出来たり、開発者のインタビューやコミック版コントラなどおまけコンテンツも充実してます(コンテンツはチャレンジモードをやりこむことで追加されていきます)。
どこか懐かしい2Dのグラフィックも相まって普遍的なアクションゲームの面白さを堪能出来ました。
