マンハッタンのおしゃれな文化をベースに編集される本誌は、知的なおしゃれの原点を本棚にもとめた特集。本棚あるいは書棚は、その書棚を作り、使うためであるが、その使い勝手のよさといのは、本棚つくりの思想となる。その思想の中核が書棚のオーナー自身である。だが、本誌が紹介する世界でも著名な図書館の書架は、個人が模倣できるものもあるが、大体は模倣すると味気ない分類体系でしかないものが多い。最たるは国立国会図書館の書架だが、どいう訳か紹介されている。
現在世界で活躍するアーティストや物書きさんを中心に、個人の書斎と書棚を紹介しているが、個性的で参考になる。また物故した作家ではあるが現在も家族が維持している書斎なども紹介され、個人の知的文化の拠点・棲家はどうあるのが美しいかを多様な視点で紹介している。流し読みでも十二分に楽しめる。それを探すポイントはもちろん写真。
本特集の中核は、港千尋氏の「図書館化する世界の中で」というエッセイであろう。グーグルなど検索エンジンの中核思想は、元祖ヤフーでも図書館分類や印刷本の電子化などいづれも図書館の手法である。そして、マンハッタンで一番多い文化施設は「ニューヨーク公共図書館」を初めとする図書館のネットワークなのである。日本では、個性的な優秀な公共図書館が少ないために、本誌では書店の紹介をしているのであろう、アメリカの書店は、図書館代わりになるお店も多いのだが、日本では数えられるくらいに減少している。だが、健在、その一端も紹介される。取材に手をぬかない本誌の良さである。十二分に楽しめる知的道楽としての書斎・書棚論、ここにあり。
