「人のやっていることを追いかけるよりも、何かちがうことをやってみようということは、いつも思います。その方が、競争がなくて楽ですから（笑）」（南部陽一郎シカゴ大学名誉教授）。

今年の日本人ノーベル賞受賞者4人のインタビューと、その解説が載っています。科学雑誌らしく、一般の新聞のものよりは少し詳しいと思います。何度読んでも、日本人の一人としてちょっとうれしくなります。また、こうやって読むと、改めて偉大で個性的な方々だなあと思います。

今月の特集は「波動」です。音波、電磁波、地震波、電子の波。TVやラジオ、携帯電話、光通信と、今や我々はひたすら電磁波とその応用技術のお世話になって生きています。よって、その基本中の基本の概念を分かりやすく理解するということは、理系文系問わず基礎的な教養として重要だと思います。相変わらずVisualな図を多用してわかりやすくしてあります。

「マーズ・エクスプレス」が撮影した火星の映像は凄いです。また、異常気象の説明では、インド洋でもエルニーニョのような現象があることが説明されています。さりげなく見開き２ページで紹介されていますが、次世代線形加速器ILCの説明はコンパクトで良く出来ています。また、地震を起こす３つの有名なプレートの他に４つ目として「関東フラグメント」が見つかったというのは、驚きをもって読みました。

尚、1月号はカレンダーがついている分、少しお得です。宇宙のカレンダーで、広げるとかなり大きいです。
