<ストーリー>

ジュリー・テイモアは、ライオン･キングのニュー･ヨーク公演の演出を手がけたことでも有名な女性芸術家です。彼女は多くの人がやりたくとも避けていたビートルズの曲だけを使ったミュージカル（登場人物の心情を歌詞だけで表す）を作品化しました。日本では夏に劇場公開されましたが、年末すでにブルーレイやDVDが発売されました。

映像が美しいこの作品はブルーレイで買うと作品の良さが良く分かります。同時に出演している若い女優・俳優たちの歌の上手さにも驚かされます。飛びぬけて上手い二人も登場しますが、あとでプロと分かり納得しました。それにしてもアメリカのショービジネス界の裾野の広さ深さに感服してしまいます。何が言いたいかは作品を見てください。

物語は、アメリカ兵だった消息不明の父を尋ねてアメリカに渡るリバプールの造船工場で働く青年ジュードの深く楽しい若い経験です。日々同じ事を繰り返しながらも安定した生活を選ぶものも居れば、それを苦痛と感じて抜け出そうともがく人もいます。それぞれの人生観ですが、この映画では安定は重要ながら少しだけしか描かれていません。

ビートルズを中途半端に知る人がこの作品を見ると、断片的な知識で映像や物語の一部を否定するのでしょう。

楽曲とシーンのからみも上手いし、状況設定とアレンジによってビートルズの楽曲が新しい命を得ていると思う場面も多い。30曲以上のビートルズナンバーが流れるのだけれど、単にビートルズの楽曲を伴奏に使うというやり方をしていないところがいい。
見せ方が同じパターンでの演出はなく、いろんなアイデアでみせます。一曲丸々一人で歌うパターンもありますが、複数の人間に歌わせて、物語を繋いでいったり、場面の切り替えや選曲の意外性、楽曲のユニークなアレンジ、突然出てくる視覚効果、作り物感を意識した美術や衣装、鮮やかな色彩感覚。
それにしても、歌詞の内容とストーリーが絶妙にシンクロしているのがすごい！！

いろいろな遊びや引用が散りばめられていているのも楽しい。
ベトナム戦争への反戦デモ、暴動、キング牧師暗殺など、当時の世相や文化を散りばめながら、歴史的事実や実在の人物を連想させる部分も、センス良くアレンジされている。
ジュードはジョン・レノンがモデル（？）、ジャニス・ジョプリンを思わせるセディと、ジミー・ヘンドリックスのジョジョという登場人物も面白い。
映画の最後が屋上でのライブ演奏になっているのも、もちろんビートルズのドキュメンタリー映画「レット・イット・ビー」の屋上ライブですよね。

残念だったのが、「ゲット・バック」が歌われなかったこと。ギタリストの名がジョジョだから絶対どこかで歌われると思っていたのに．．．。
