Sarah Brightman, the world's biggest-selling soprano artists of all time will release her first-ever Christmas album titled A Winter Symphony. A Winter Symphony brings her virtuosity and originality to many of the season's classics. Her angelic voice glides through an array of Christmas favourites including "Silent Night" and "In the Bleak Midwinter." Her resplendent duet "Ave Maria" is sung with Fernando Lima and also featured are timeless pop tracks including Abba's famous instrumental song "Arrival" plus a gorgeous rendition of Neil Diamond's classic, "I've Been this Way Before".

オーディオ的には、辛めの音質で、サラの歌声は甘さが抑えられ、
伴奏の高音域が明瞭にクッキリと強めに録音されていて、
冬の音楽にふさわしいと思いました。

名曲、名演奏揃いですが、特に印象的なのは、

４「きよしこの夜」は、清らかで美しく、
エンヤの神秘的な「イーハ・ヒューイン(「きよしこの夜」)」と双璧をなすと思います。

１１バッハ／グノーの「アヴェ・マリア」は、
『ＣＬＡＳＳＩＣＳ』に納められているシューベルトの「ＡＶＥＭＡＲＩＡ」と比較すると、
オーケストラ共々ドラマチックに歌い上げている感じがしました。

１４日本盤ボーナス・トラックの「若葉のころ」が、
しみじみとした歌い方で、思わず青春を思い起こし涙してしまいました

前作「神々のシンフォニー」から早くも発売された今作。
まだ冬には少々早い気がしますが、そんなことも気にならない程一つの作品として楽しむことができます。
今回はオペラ調の歌唱をあえて抑え、囁くように優しく歌い上げている印象を受けました。
そんなサラの美声とコーラスやオーケストラの美しい音色が上手く調和し、極寒ではなく少し肌寒い、きらきら光る雪景色が目に浮かぶようです。
選曲は讃美歌やポップスなど幅広く、「クリスマス・アルバム」とひとくくりにはできないでしょう。

個人的に特にお勧めなのはABBAのカヴァー（1）Arrival、もとはPasionのフェルナンド・リマの楽曲であり、彼と再共演している（3）Ave Maria、ニール・ダイヤモンドの（6）I've Been This Way Before、サラにしては珍しくとても陽気でノリノリな（9）I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everydayでしょうか。
（10）Amazing Graceやバッハ/グノーの（11）Ave Maria等のクラシカル曲もより「冬」という季節を感じさせるサラらしいアレンジになっており、とても美しい曲ぞろいです。

私はサラの大ファンでほとんどすべてのCDとDVDを持っていますが、Eden、Luna、Classics、Harlemの時のような、息と声量がフワーっと広がって包み込まれるような満足感が得られない曲がいくつかあります。特に１１曲目のAve Mariaを聞くと、高音領域で透明感のある声が損なわれてきたことが心配されます。思い起こされるのはNana Mouskouriが年齢とともに若き日のメロディラインの美しさと危うさの絶妙なバランスが失われ壊れていったような恐怖を感じました。大活躍のサラのことですから、一時の不調であってほしいと切に切に願っています。
　それでも僕はサラの大ファンですし、決してかわることはありません。１２月のクリスマスシーズンには毎日聞いておりました。
