2008 album from the former A Tribe Called Quest rapper, his first solo album in nine years. Produced primarily by Q-Tip with plenty of live instrumentation and a love fixation, The Renaissance is a stark portrait of the artist as an elder statesman. One listen to the frenetic drumming and strutting live bassline of a track like 'ManWomanBoogie' reveals that Q-Tip is on a mission to create original music as timeless as the tracks he used to sample once upon a time. The Renaissance marks the return of one of the most recognizable voices in all of Hip Hop.

Q-TIPの新作だ。こちとら何年も待ったのだよ。しかもこうきたか！

たまに出回るブートなんかを聞いてると生演奏が中心だった。ところがフタをあけてみれば
見事なまでのサンプリング美学がストイックに貫かれた「激シブ」サウンド。
ジ・ウマーの浮遊感のあるタイトな音を継承したネタとループのセンスはやはり素晴らしい。

リリックもブッシュ政権への批判や朋友J.Dillaへ捧げたもの、自分のアイデンティを問う
ものが多く、Q-tipにとってのヒップホップを再定義するような真摯な作品と受け取れる。

派手さは皆無だ。サンプリング＆ループ中心の音作りだが懐古趣味的なわけでもない。
あるのは異常に高いクオリティと緊張感、そして音楽に対する愛情に溢れている。
「The Renaissance」というタイトル、AKAIのサンプラーを高らかに掲げたジャケも意味深。

やっぱりこの人のサンプリングはすごいです
２のwon't　tradeがなにげにはまります
ファーストではありません

音の粒が互いに邪魔することなく最高のバランスで鳴っていて、
これ以上無いくらい楽しくて美しいHip Hopサウンドに仕上がってます。

スタイルは基本的にTribe時代を踏まえながらも
ここでは楽器とサンプルが素晴らしく自然に溶け合っている感じで、
Kamaal the Abstractでの実験性がより軽やか、かつ個性的な形で発揮されています。
「懐古趣味」で片付けてしまうのはすごく勿体無いんじゃないでしょうか。

Gettin' Upをはじめ、心に染みるような名作トラックが目白押し。
J DillaのMoveはかなりマッドです。もちろん、Tipのラップは言わずもがな。
2000年代の暮れにこんなアルバムを聴けるのは幸せだ。
