昨年、傑作「Easy Tiger」をリリースしたばかりだというのに、あっという間にこれほどの作品を送り出すとは驚きだ。
この男の創作力、アイデア、は底知れない。
特に前作から続く楽曲のクオリティの高さ、繊細さ、表現力は素晴らしい。
プロデューサーはバンドとTom Schick、そしてバンドはNeal Casalを中心とした鉄壁の布陣。
前述した通り楽曲は何れも高水準、サウンドは前作の生音を活かしたバラード中心の作りを受け継いでいる部分もあるが、表面上で聞こえてくるサウンドよりも更に深く、重く響く。
ガレッジロック、ブルースロック、ロックンロール、ＵＫロック、アーシーなアメリカンロック、ルーツロック、いろんなロックがRyanの感情そしてNeal Casalを中心としたバンドの永続的、普遍的なロック感を通し、それを背景にすることで、より濃く、だからこそより単純に「かっこいいロック」として聞こえてくる、そんなロックアルバム。

　素晴らしかった前作「Easy Tiger」から1年と、彼にしては長い（笑）インターバルで届けられた新作は、再びCardinalsと組んでのバンド名義にして、早くもマスターピースの佇まい。この溢れんばかりの才能と創作意欲はどうだろう！

　ライアンとバンドの相性の良さは既に「Cold Roses」等で実証済みだが、奏でる楽器の一つ一つの音の輪郭まではっきりと見て取れるような、まるで音の隙間すら計算されたかのような、過不足のない演奏が今の時代には新鮮に映るね。
　ペダルスティールなんかを効果的に取り入れた、ややカントリータッチの曲も多いんだが、気負ったところなんか微塵も感じさせないのに、バンドの一体感を伴った“疾走感”すら感じさせるあたり、やはり一筋縄ではいかないセンスの良さを感じるんだよね。そう、拳を振り上げてがなるだけがロックじゃないってこと。

　それにしても今どき、全12曲で40分なんて、この潔さにも脱帽だね！

アルバムジャケットはTHE CARDINALSのシンボルでしょうか？
本作は、これまでよりもカントリー色、シンガーソングライター色が希薄で、
バンドサウンドを強く打ち出しているのが特徴
(後半はシンガーソングライター寄りのシンプルなサウンドの曲が占める)。


これまでTHE CARDINALSは、唄に寄り添うような控え目な音だったが、
本作は、E.Guitarの音が重厚。
特に4曲目までは、それが顕著。
E.Guitarだけでなく、Backing Vocalsのハーモニーも心地良い。
力強いバンドサウンドに呼応するかのようにかつてないほどRyanの歌声も力強い。
4.MAGICKのドライヴ感のある激し目の曲なんて、とてもカッコいい。

とはいえ、Ryanらしい繊細で美しいメロディーが随所に散りばめられているので、
ご安心を。
そして何より「泣き」のRyanの真骨頂と言えそうな12.STOP
RyanがPianoを弾きながら静かに静かに始まり、徐々にViolinが盛り上げていく
この曲は、Ryanの繊細さが滲み出た名曲ではないでしょうか。

結論としては、
これまでは“Love Is Hell”が一番好きでしたが、
本作も同じぐらい好きな一枚になりました。

私生活ではトラブルメイカーとして知られ、どこか破綻した印象のあるRyan。
その繊細な面はこれまでも音楽からうかがい知れた。
個人的には、もっとクレイジーな面の表れた曲をそろそろ聴きたいです。
4.MAGICKのような激しい曲がもう1、2曲あれば、文句無しでした。
