一時は久しく品切れ状態になっていたりもしたサヴァリッシュの『魔笛』のDVDが、DTS音声と原語字幕をともなって復活しました。この盤の上演は、しばしば「オーソドックスな演出」と表現されています。そして現代ではあまりオーソドックスな演出を好まない風潮が、一部の評論家の方々などの間に見られます。しかし、特にドイツ系オペラの場合、もともと非現実的な童話的・神話的な題材が多いのですから、特にオペラ初心者の方々は、最初からあまり奇をてらったような演出を見てしまうと、もとの話がどういうストーリーなのかよくわからなくなってしまうでしょう。その点、この盤なら安心して初心者の方にも薦められます。無論、オーソドックスなだけが取り得の演奏というわけではなく、歌手・指揮者・オーケストラのいずれもまずは非の打ち所のない演奏をしてくれています。名実共に『魔笛』の代表的名盤と言ってよいものでしょう
