山下裕二が表層的に琳派のデザインを捉え、山口晃が光悦を、しりあがり寿が宗達を、ほしよりこが酒井抱一を漫画で解説。最後は杉本博司が琳派を論じる。それぞれは魅力ある論者だと思うけれど、どこかで見たような顔ぶれがどこかで読んだようなことを語っている気がする。
どこかと言えば、こういう企画はマガジンハウスのBRUTUSやCASAがやるものじゃないだろうか、と思っているうちに、BRUTUSの琳派特集が発売された。向こうは半額以下だけど、琳派の部分だけでは大差がない。
ポップカルチャーの地平で琳派を論じるのは目新しくなくて、むしろこのところずっとそういう切り口が続いているので、逆に食傷気味。見る上でまず「カッコイイ」とか「欲しい」が大事なのは認めるけれど、それだけなら今の琳派風日本デザインと同じでしかない。
もちろん特集以外のレビューの質と量は美術手帖ならではだけれど、美術手帖らしい特集の組み方を考えてほしい。正史があって稗史があるというか、正統があって異端や新機軸があるのだから。
