On Rhino's 2008 compilation, The Smith's biggest hits and most important tracks are represented as a deluxe 2 Disc version containing a charming collection of B-sides and rarities.The Smiths formed in Manchester in 1982 and quickly rose to become the quintessential British indie rock band of their day. Powered by the collaboration between lead singer and lyricist Morrissey and lead guitarist and co-songwriter Johnny Marr, their sound had a literary and musical depth that was complex, emotional and often controversial, at the same time, it rang with The Smiths' unique twist on timeless melodic pop sensibilities. Their rise also marked a break from the synth-heavy pop and post-punk that had been defining U.K. music.

とりあえず、実際に商品を手に入れて聴いてみた感想として…うん、買ってよかった。少なくとも損をしたとは思わない。でも色々と気になるところがあって、それ故に五つ星はちょっと付けられない。

まず、リマスターの音質。これは結構よかったと思う。期待していたボトムの強い音ではなかったが、"Nowhere Fast"とか"Jeane"とか、明らかに過去の音源より音がいい。複雑なギターの音の絡みが細かい部分まで聞き取れる感じに仕上がっている（ジョニー・マー監修だから当然と言えば当然か）。

あと、たぶん"Meat Is Murder(live)"と"Handsome Devil(live at ハシエンダ)"は、公式のリリースとしては初めてのCD化じゃないかと思う。ただ、後者に関しては『ハットフル・オブ・ホロウ』収録のピール・セッション版の方がカッコいいと思うのだが。

"Hand In Glove"が、オリジナル・シングルバージョンなのもいい。既に『ハットフル…』や『ラウダー・ザン・ボム』でCD化されてはいるが、これまでベスト盤には何故か1stアルバム『ザ・スミス』収録のジョン・ポーターによるリミックスが収録されることが多かっただけに。オアシスのリアムもそこはこだわってたな。反対に、"The Boy With The Thorn In His Side"や"Ask"はシングル・バージョンではない。それぞれ『ワールド・ウォント・リッスン』と『ヴェリー・ベスト・オブ』で聴けるからいいけど。

"The Headmaster Ritual"や"Barbarism Begins At Home"のように、英国以外の国でシングルA面扱いの曲を網羅、…と思ったらドイツでシングルになった"Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others"を収録してなかった。残念。

あと、確かにシングルのB面には入ってたけど、『クイーン・イズ・デッド』収録のものと全く同じ音源の"Vicar In A Tutu" と"Cemetry Gates"を入れる必要はないだろう、と。その代わりに収録すべき曲は他にもいっぱいあるはず（"The Draize Train"や"Rubber Ring"、"Is It Really So Strange?"あたり）。それと、"These Things Take Time"と"Back To The Old House"は、『ハットフル…』収録のラジオセッション版を入れて欲しかった。スタジオ録音版は『ラウダー・ザン・ボム』でも聴けるし、曲の持つ情感をより引き出しているのは『ハットフル…』の方だと思うから。

『決定版』とは言えないと思うが、それでも過去にリリースされたスミス関連のベスト盤やコンピレーションとかに較べると、段違いの充実度があると思う。特にスミスというバンドの持つ「動」の面と「静」の面を両方とも堪能できるという意味では、最良の「入門編」と言えるのではないだろうか。
