ART-SCHOOL初のベストアルバム、
『Ghosts & Angels』です。

バンド側の意思でのリリースなのか、レコード会社との契約消化などで出さざる得なかったのか、その辺の事情は分かりませんが、フルアルバム4枚にミニアルバムは8枚（！）も出しているので、そろそろこういった入門編といえる編集盤の1枚はあって良いような気がします。レコード会社が何度か変わったアーティストにありがちな、権利の関係で全キャリアを網羅出来ないという事もなく、代表曲らしい代表曲が18曲入っています。2300円という価格も手頃で良い感じですね。曲順は、リリースされた年代順に並べているシンプルなものですが、バンドの成長やメンバーチェンジによる音・サウンドバリエーションの変化などを感じながら聴ける年代順でのリストというのは、入門編ということも含め考えれば、下手に曲順をいじるよりも真っ当な形でバンドの入り口を提示出来ると思うので、無難で面白味には多少欠けますが、これも一つの正解ではあると思います。



往年のファンの本音としては、未発表音源や新曲などの”編集盤以上の価値”をベスト盤に見出せると嬉しいものですが、バンド側も「初期の曲をあんまり知らない人や名前しか知らなくて興味がある人たち向け」と発言しているようですし、同日に新譜ミニ・アルバムも出してくれるようなので、「これはこれ」として受け止めようと思います。

入門編としては満点だと思いますが、過去作を持ってるファンにはあまり必要ないアイテムなので、マイナス1で4点にしておきます。唯一、代表曲でもありシングル曲でもある「EVIL」が収録されてないのが気になります。なんで？

グランジ直系の疾走感溢れる轟音サウンドを響かせてきたART-SCHOOL。
シングル曲を年代順に並べただけのシンプルなベスト盤なので、全作持ってる人には特に必要のない作品です。
下手に未発表ボーナストラックとか付けて3000円だったら絶対買わないけど、代表曲が18曲も入って2310円だったら納得のいくところかな、と。

既にレア盤化してる“SWAN SONG”や“MISS WORLD”（←こっちは普通に入手可能）とかのアルバム未収録曲も入ってるし、結構親切な内容だと思います。
どの曲もかっこいいし。
新しいファンを獲得するためのプレゼンテーション作品としてはかなり好内容なのでは？

二十歳前後の数年間、年末になる度、中沢けいの「海を感じる時」を読んでいた。十八歳でこれだけのものを描けた作者の才能と、講談社文庫では同時収録されている「銀の雫滴る岸」のなかで女子高生の主人公が新聞部の先輩から言われる「ふつうだと思うね。くやしいだろうけど」という言葉を自分への戒めのように思っていた。
アートスクールの曲を聴き始めた時、私はすでに大人の年齢だった。
アートスクールのうたは常に若者の側にいて、成長しきれない私の心に添うものではあったけれど、また、若さのなかでこういうことをうたい散らしている人がやがて、年を経てゆき、何をうたうだろうかということが知りたいと思った。これらの結末を、行く末を、果てを見たいと思った。
木下理樹が三十歳になって、ベスト盤が出た。
これはひとつの節目か。
二十一歳の時に描いたという「斜陽」から、このベスト盤には木下の二十代が詰まっているというわけか。
それにしても18曲も入ってるのにトータル70分足らず。
曲の短さは何かに比例してるのか?生き急ぐ速さか?(笑)
どうか投げ出すことなく、その果てにあるものを見せてほしいと切に願う。
