　UKのベテランMarillion。このバンド、80年代にカリスマVo・フィッシュを擁し成功し、Voがスティーヴ・ホーガスに代わり精力的に活動。90年代中期にメジャーのEMIから契約を切られたのだが、逆にそういったしがらみがなくなった分、自分たちのやりたい音楽をを貪欲な創作意欲で作り続けているのが素晴らしい。だって、去年｢Somewhere Else｣を発表したかと思うと、今回は２枚同時発売(HPにおけるメールオーダーでは２枚組豪華仕様)なのである。アルバムのブランクが４年５年は当たり前になった昨今、ベテランである彼らがこうやってコンスタントにアルバムを発表し続けることをまず評価するべきであろう(まあ、契約的に身軽ってのもあるんだろうけど)。
　スティーヴ・ホーガスが加入以降のMarillionの名盤といえば奇跡的にプログレ的アプローチとなった｢Brave('94年)｣や次作の｢Afraid Of Sunlight('95年)｣あたりの名前が挙げられ、どちらかというとそれ以降、つまり2000年以降の作品は、輪郭のはっきりしたPOPでロック的なアプローチが目立つせいかイマイチ過小評価されているのが残念である。まあ、私だって上記の２作は大好きだし傑作ということには異論はないんだけども、よく聴けばけばその後の作品だって枠組み自体は変わっても根っこの部分、独特の透明感や叙情性、浮遊感は変わっていないのである。そんなこと、彼らが好きで数年聴き続けてきた者ならすぐにわかるのだが、ファン層には未だに｢Brave｣を求める人が多いのもまた事実であろう。
　で、今作だが、一聴したところ、相変わらずのMarillion節全開。個人的にはかなり｢Afraid〜｣に近い感触を持った作品である。｢This Train Is My Life｣の冒頭部分なんかは名曲｢King｣などを彷彿とさせられるし、タイトル曲で10分を越える大作である｢Happiness Is the Road｣における静寂の感じられる展開(途中ちょっとレゲエ調のリズムがあったりして面白いのだけど)は少しだけ｢Brave｣の壮大さを思い出させられたりする。こういった曲は今やMarillionしか作れないだろう。すでに職人の域に達していると思う。
　まあ、かつての作品との比較はアーティストとして活動している以上迷惑な行為であるのでやめておいて、全体的にホーガスMarillionの持つ不変の｢根っこ｣の部分がここ数作の中では一番色濃く抽出された作品だと私は思う。My Spaceで先行発表されていた｢Whatever Is Wrong With You｣なんかは彼らの真骨頂と言いたくなる佳曲であろう。ファンであれば納得の１枚…いや、２枚である。
　ただ、若干２枚を通して同じようなテンポ・アプローチの曲が続くため、全部通して聴きとおすのはつらいということだけは挙げておきたい。できれば最初はなんとなく流しておくのが良いと思います。

　しかし、この勝負作、相変わらず日本発売はない('98年の｢Radiation｣以降ないんだけど…)。これだけ実績・能力のあるベテランバンドなんだから、いくらインディレーベルからのリリースとはいえ、そろそろ日本盤でリリースしてもらいたいものである。過小評価の要因はそれにもあるんだと思うんだけどなあ。
　
　いいバンドはこんなところにもいますよ〜。

2枚が一度に発売になっているが、彼らのサイトからは2枚セットで、かつ予約販売時に購入決定したファンについては、ＣＤ１枚につき８０Ｐを超える歌詞＆写真集がつき、ハードケースに同梱され、ボックス仕様で購入できる。（更に言えば、予約購入者全員の氏名がクレジットに謝意とともに印字されている。私も載りました！）

作風としては、おだやかなピアノに導かれて、人生というものをとらえた深淵な詩世界を幽玄で美しいサウンドと歌唱でつづっていくという最近のマリリオンの音世界を見事に最良の形にしたものが提示されている。刺激や新機軸、といったものを求めてはいけない。ここには熟練のアーティストによる唯一無比の音世界が広がる。２１世紀のピンク・フロイドとでも言いたいところだ。
