2008 UK digitally remastered deluxe two CD digipak edition features the 23 track 'hits' collection joined by bonus 22 track CD that contains rare tracks, b-sides and selected live recordings. Rarities include the Troy Tate produced 'Pretty Girls Make Graves' and 'What's The World', a live cover of a track originally by James and more. The Smiths formed in Manchester in 1982 and quickly rose to become the quintessential British indie rock band of their day. Powered by the collaboration between lead singer and lyricist Morrissey and lead guitarist and co-songwriter Johnny Marr, their sound had a literary and musical depth that was complex, emotional and often controversial, at the same time, it rang with The Smiths' unique twist on timeless melodic pop sensibilities. 「Hang the Blessed DJ」というフレーズは確か、たまたまモリッシーが聴いていたラジオ番組でチェルノブイリの原発事故の報道をしていて、その後にワムか何かのチャらい曲を流したDJに憤って作った「Panic」の一節だったと思います。彼は、そのナヨナヨとしたパフォーマンスからロックなイメージを抱かない人もいるかもしれませんが、このような作詞のエピソードを知ると、どんなバンドよりもロックなバンドだということがわかると思います。自分は、このバンドの曲を未だに良く聴くので、このCDは「Remastered」であって、自分の聴いたことの無い貴重な曲である「Jeane」や「Wonderful Woman」が聴くことができて、他の既知の曲でもバージョン違いやライブ音源が聴けるので購入するつもりでいます。20年以上前に解散したバンドで今でもベスト版がリリースできるということは今でも根強い人気がある証拠であると思います。だけれども、自分の周りには彼らの曲を知っている人はいません。それが、とても不思議で寂しいです

最近、スミスを再評価するようになりました！！
この２００８リマスターベスト盤は、彼らの集大成ですね。
また、マニアックなディスク２もコレクターには魅力的でしょう。
音もよくなってます。
この輸入盤は、紙ジャケ、デジパック仕様でそれなりに凝った作りになっています。

ただ気になるのは、ディスク２レア音源で
2. ハンサム・デヴィル(ライヴ・アット・ハシエンダ)
の演奏中に左音声が途切れ欠けます。
どうせなら、完璧な録音音源を収録して欲しかったですね。
ハンサム・デヴィルは隠れた名曲ですし、
ハットフル・オブ・ホロウ収録のバージョンでもよかったのではと思いました。

おもしろいのはジャケですね。
彼らのアルバムはほとんど人物の顔がメインなのは有名ですが、このアルバムにしてスミス初登場です。
しかも、もっと気の利いたフォトはなかったのか〜、と思える品のなさ。
まぁ、花束振り回して歌うバンドなのでその雰囲気はあるのかも知れません。

ボク一番の聴き所は、ジス・チャーミング・マン(ニュー・ヨーク・ヴォーカル)ですね。
同曲のマキシにも収録されていましたが、名曲ジス・チャーミング・マンがロングに楽しめます！！

明らかに、音にオーラのあるバンドというのが存在する。

ライブにオーラがあるバンドというのは、実はけっこういる。
というか、ライブや立ち振る舞いのオーラというのは獲得形質的なものだと思う。どんなにゴミみたいな音楽をやっていても、自分に臆面のない人間なら、たとえばCD売上の数字だけで自信に変わり、オーラが出せてしまうものだと思っている。

しかし、音にオーラがあるバンドというのは、売れていない頃の音源でも、それこそデモ音源にさえも、何か心をつかむ神秘的なものが備わっている。
証拠など何もないが、僕のしがない音楽経験はそう語っているような気がしてならない。
そして、それは音楽性とか、技術とか、そういうものとまた別のベクトル（特にボーカルの存在感が大きなウェイトのような気がするが）で表出するのだとも思う。

ザ・スミスは明らかにそういう部類のバンドだと思う。This Charming Manのイントロのような、それこそ何か新しい世界が眼前に立ちあがる音像や、The Headmaster Ritualのブリッジに右パンから聞こえてくる、マーのマイナーアルペジオが生み出す、一朝一夕には鳴らせないタイプのメランコリックがそうだ。
なんというか、楽譜に書けない「形容しがたい雰囲気」が、明らかに存在する。

他には、オアシスやストーン・ローゼズ、マイナーなバンドになるがワイアーなどはそういう部類だと思う。音楽を志している方には申し訳ないが、これは「練習」という陳腐な行為で獲得できるものではなく、まさに才能の賜物なのだと思う。



↑全部どうでもいいので、それより早くオリジナルアルバムを再発しやがれ。
