ロック、ハウス、エレクトロニカ、ファンクなどの要素に「向井っぽいカンジ」を足して出来上がった傑作。
デイブ・フリッドマンの功績なのか音の粒がくっきりと絡み合って、セッションの緊張感や夜の都市の寂しさを伴った空気感みたいなものが、ぎゅっとパッケージされたアルバムだと思う。

ギターよりシンセやサンプリングを使った曲が多いのにもかかわらずナンバーガールが大好きだった自分がこのアルバムに魅かれるのは、焦燥感や空虚感のような感情を沸きだたせる独特な力を持っているという点では同じだからかもしれない。

ゆらゆら帝国の空洞ですでも打ち込みを駆使して独自のからっぽな世界を表現していた。
ギターバンドが溢れる今、こういった音楽はバンドが辿り着くゴールのひとつとも言えるんじゃないでしょうか。

今まではZAZEN聴くときは気合入れて聴かなければなりませんでしたが、
今回は静かな気持ちの時も聴けます。
決して熱くなくなったという訳ではありません。
バンドとして洗練度が更に上がり、無駄なフレーズが一切ありません。
音数は少なくなりましたが、本当に必要な音だけを選んでいて
音の切れ味は益々増しています。
ZAZENの現時点での最高傑作と自身を持って薦めることができます。

ZAZEN BOYS2年8ヶ月ぶりのニュー・アルバム。その名も「ZAZEN BOYS4」。
向井秀徳にしては時間が掛かったほう・・・だと思う。
ただここまでサウンドプロダクツが変貌していると、その経過にも納得してしまう。

シングル「I Don't Wanna Be With You」の時から予感していたのだが
今回はエレクトロニカをふんだんに駆使したアルバムになっている。しかしこれがまた、
シングルと同じ流れというわけではなくギターサウンドときっちり合わせている為、
正しくロックとエレクトロニカを融合させたかのようなあまり聴きなじみのない音飾になっている。
　また、これがZAZENの作品、向井秀徳によるソングライティングとアレンジという部分も大きいだろう。
既に、彼の存在自体が究極のオリジネーターとして成り立っている為単なるロックとエレクトロニカを合わせただけではない、
唯一無二の作品に仕上がっている。

このアルバムは綺麗に歪んでいる。そんな作品だと感じた。
とにかく生音はいつも通りのジャキジャキとした、またはカクカクとした奇妙なビートを刻むのと同時に
電子の部分は、非常に響きが良い透き通るようなつくりになっているためみずみずしさが半端ではない。
「Asobi」はいつも通りの向井節をのたまいつつも、後半の電子のメロディが綺麗過ぎて涙腺を刺激される。
「Honnouji」は前述のロック＋エレクトロニカが最も良いバランスで混同している曲で、「本能寺」という言葉の響きも心地良い。
「Memories」はこの中ではギターロックの雰囲気が強く、タイトルは直訳で思い出、な為、なんとなくナンバーガールを髣髴とさせた。
「Taratine」は言葉の隅々に棘があり、曲自体もかなりエキセントリックである。

とにかく一曲一曲がここまで個性的で、向井秀徳の新しい試みもきっちり実っているという
なんとも言えぬ、素晴らしいアルバムである。いや、マジで08年の日本のロックの最前線といっていいかもしれない。

ZAZEN BOYSのような音楽はZAZEN BOYSでしか表現できないし、向井秀徳のような音楽は向井秀徳にしか絶対に作れない。
今やナンバーガールのフォロワーたちが沢山台頭してきているが彼はどんどん先へ先へと行ってしまう。
その飽くなきストイック精神には尊敬する。　これもまた、ZAZENの傑作の一つです。聴いて欲しい。
