う~ん、ひさびさに聞いたスターシップ。いいですね！さすがにビルボードで上位をとるだけのことはある．．．といってもかなり昔の話ではありますが。６０年代から活動しているだけあってかなり完成されたメロディを持った実力派のバンドです。（残念ながら今回は曲は別人が書いてます．．）１曲目のWE BUILT THIS CITY、これは当時とてもヒットしました。とてもテンポのいい曲調でスターシップらしさが出ているＰＯＰなナンバーです。２曲目のSARAはメロディアスな中に重厚さが出ていてこれがまたいい！３曲目TOMORROW DOESN'T MATTER TONIGHTはちょっとハードで渋めです。４曲目ROCK MYSELF TO SLEEP、ちょっと単調かな？５曲目DESPERATE HEART、なかなかです。６曲目PRIVATE ROOM、これは個人的には結構気に入ってます。カッティングが生きてます。７曲目BEFORE I GO、SARAにちょっと似ていますが落ち着いたリズムでいいです。８曲目HEARTS OF THE WORLD、紅一点グレースのVOCALが響いてきます。かなりリズムは完成されています。９曲目LOVE RUSTS、最後の曲というだけあって少し他の曲と調子がガラッと変わります。重厚なバラードというところでしょうか？このアルバムについては自分達で書いていないせいか曲調がバリエーションにとんでいます。どちらかというとかなりストレートに売れ線路線ですが、その分あたりはずれは無いです。１，２曲目はビルボードでも確か１位（？か２位）になった曲なので一見の価値はあると思います。

設立メンバーであるポールカントナー脱退後、バンド名称変更したアルバム。バンドとしてのポテンシャルはもはやなくて、グレーススリック／ミッキートーマスの両人のボーカルバンドに成り下がっていた状況。

プロデュースはザッパスクール出でワンチャンを当てていたピーターウルフ（鍵盤）。サウンドは後期ハートみたいなアリーナロック仕様でアーテステックな側面での見るべき部分はなにもないありさま。

バンド存続のために外部ライターによるバラード路線／ラジオフレンドリーな楽曲を投入。その結果２曲がヒット。だが皮肉にもそのことがこのバンドには外部の力に依存しないと生きて生きないことを暴露。

どのような紆余曲折があったのか、詳しい事は知りません。正直、そこまでジェファーソン・スターシップ(ジェファーソン・エラプレイン含む)を追いかけてきた訳ではありませんので(^^;
とは言え、"シュール・リアリスティック・ピロウ"の時代とは隔世の感がある事は十二分に判ります。所謂シスコのロック・バンド、ヒッピー/サイケデリックの雄という面影は希薄ですが、メンバーも変わり時代も変わり、、、となれば、彼等が(主体的に)音楽的方向性を変えたとしても、それはそれ。[1]、[2]といった楽曲は、30数年に及ぶ彼等の活動を通じて最大の(メジャー)ヒットになった事は周知の事実です。
オリジナリティ、と言いますか、メンバ自らの楽曲が殆どない事に若干の疑問が残りますが、それでもこの変化が見事に成功した事について異議を唱えるものではありません。
リアルタイムでは[1]や[2]を単発的に聴いていたのですが、こうして全体を聴いてみてもいい意味で程よくコントロールされた(如何にも売れそうな)作品であることに気付かされます。
閑話：
私はエイプリル・ワインのバージョンを先に聴いていたので、(今更ですが)[4]を聴いて"おおっ、カバーしてるのか"と思った次第です(^^;
