　D.C.クーパーのソロ活動をあまり快く思っていなかった等諸説が報じられているが、ともかく、リーダーのアンドレ(Key)によりD.C.は解雇。3代目のVo.として、元アーテンションのJohn Westが加入した。ロブ・ハルフォード脱退後の、JUDAS PRIESTの新Vo.最有力候補と言われただけあり超人的に声域が広い。D.C.クーパーも声域は広かったが、それ以上だ。D.C.より少し高い位の低音からスタートして、女性の悲鳴くらいの高音まで到達する。

　ただ、声質的にはD.C.の方がバンドには合っていた気がする。JWは少々声の出が重く、ソウルフルで癖のある声質。上手いことは上手いが好みは分かれるだろう。それと…外見はD.C.の方が美形だった（苦笑）。従って女性票は減った。

　肝心の楽曲だが、より大作指向が鮮明となり、適度にポップで聞きやすかった以前に比べると、飽きることが多くなった。とはいえ、主旋律の良さは相変わらずだし、全員が上手いので、一流バンドであるのは確かだ。が、初めて聴くなら、「適度に劇的」だった D.C.時代の代表作「Moving Target」をお勧めする。

　再発を機に再度聴いてレビューしているが、今になってみるとポップでキャッチーな 3.「Cold City Lights」 が結局一番良い曲だったりする。技量はあるが、このバンドは元々、大作ばかり演奏するバンドじゃなかった。一度基本に立ち返るべきではないかという気がしている。デビューから聴いている人間として、彼らが「プログレ」に分類されるのはカンベンして欲しい。

　尚、リマスター再発に際し、「Intervention (full ver.)」と「U-Turn」（ヴォーカル入り）を追加収録している。但しレーベルが異なる為か、歌詞・対訳は無し。

ロイヤルハントのフィフス・アルバム、『フィア』のリマスター再発盤です。この作品からボーカルがＤ.Ｃ.クーパーから、とんでもない声域を持っており、低音から超高音まで自由自在なジョン・ウェストへと交代しています。楽曲は前作の『パラドックス』に収録されていたもののように大作ものが殆どで、イントロが長く、演奏時間も７分以上のものが多いです。全体的には、キャッチー度の減退した『パラドックス』といった感じでしょうか。こう聞くとこの作品を批判しているようですが、相変わらず楽曲の質は凡百のバンドを軽く蹴散らす位置にあり、アンドレ・アンダーセンのキーボードが大炸裂している大人な雰囲気を持っています。前作を気に入った方ならば、少なくとも損をする事はないでしょう。そして、このリマスター盤には、２曲のボーナス・トラックが収録されており、その中でも８の『Intervention』がヤバイ事になってます。これは、過去に発売され、現在は廃盤の企画盤に収録されていた１４分の大作で、ロイヤルハントの集大成的な楽曲となっています。イントロが長く、やっと歌い始めるのが５分後、初めてサビに入るのが曲開始から９分後ですが、ダレません！本編とこのボーナス・トラックで星５つです！

本作より、新Voのジョン・ウェストが参加。彼の実力は、バカテク集団のアーテンションにおけるパフォーマンスにて、すでに証明済みだ。このシーンの最高峰に位置する、と言っても異論はないだろう。

がしかし、このアルバムにてこの稀代のシンガーがその実力を遺憾なく発揮できているか、と言われれば疑問符がつく。楽曲が、このアルバム全体をとおして感じられるのだが、一言で言うと地味だ。静かに始まるオープニングも悪くはないが、しかしその雰囲気が支配したまま、幾度かおとずれる盛り上がりを持続できず、7曲が過ぎてしまう。

今さら彼ら個人個人の実力は疑う余地もない。ロイヤル・ハント印のついた曲に、安心して身をゆだねることが出来る。しかし、このバンドの持ち味のひとつである、「スリル」「緊張感」というものが足りない。この点がもどかしく感じられてしまう、その意味で愛情の念から星３つとさせていただいた。
