Partie Traumatic was produced by former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and is choc-full of equally effervescent pop songs just waiting to be heard. 先行で発売された『I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You』のインパクトが強過ぎたこともあって、物足りないといった意見もあるようですが、どうしようもなく切ないが故に、とにかく踊れる、といったブラックキッズ一番の魅力を余すことなく収録した1stアルバムです。
他だと『Harricane Jane』が文句なく素晴らしい以外、曲は粒ぞろいなんですが、このバンドはとにかく歌詞が個性的で面白いので、その内容を知ることで一曲一曲の印象がかなり強まります。
なので、なるべくなら日本盤を買っておくと良いと思います。

ブラック・キッズについては、よくザ・キュアーが「似ている」と引き合いに出されるのだけど、すいません、僕はまだキュアーを聴いたことはないのです…。

確かに、最近のロックバンドのトレンドである「ポップなサウンド＋踊れるビート＋80年代っぽいシンセ」という方程式において、ブラック・キッズはその典型ともいえるサウンドを出している。だが、それだけでは「よくある最近のバンド」で終わっていただろう。この悩ましげなエモいヴォーカルと中性的な歌詞が、彼らの特徴であり魅力であると感じる。

異常なまでにポップでダンサブルでありながら、歌声は内省的な響き…このアンビバレンツにグッと来てしまうのは、自分だけではないはず。
僕はいつか、彼らのライブに行き、「ハリケーン・ジェーン」と「ボーイフレンド」の演奏の中で、泣きながら思いっきりダンス！ダンス！ダンス！することを夢見ている。

とっても良いよ、これ。どの曲もアイデアとユーモアに溢れていて、つまらない曲がないです。音は80年代っぽい(何故か、うる星やつら思い出した。アニメのね。)あと、歌詞がおもしろい。
