美しさと激しさを併せ持った独自のサウンドが世界中で愛されているグラスゴー出身のバンド、モグワイが「Mr. Beast」に次いで「The Hawk Is Howling」をリリース。静寂の中で流れゆくメロディ、轟音の中に込められた静寂。その作品に身を浸していると、アルバムタイトルにもなっているHawk（鷹）の持つ強さ、美しさ、孤高さがバンドの存在そのものにシンクロしてしまうのは僕だけではないはずだ。2曲目「Batcat」、5曲目「Sun Smells Too Loud」が白眉。（silly walker）


Album Details

Mogwai's sixth studio album is, as one might expect, a brooding and atmospheric collection, full of the band's exceptional use of dynamics and creation of hypnotic soundscapes. The Hawk Is Howling is, however, partly more reflective than previous releases, perhaps sharing more in common with 2001's Rock Action. Instrumentally the band have somewhat branched out, utilising light synthesizers on tracks such as 'The Sun Smells Too Loud'. For the first time since their debut Mogwai Young Team LP, Andy Miller was on production duties. Recorded in notable Glasgow studio Chem 19 (run by the Chemikal Underground record label), this release sees Mogwai simultaneously stepping forward musically and returning to their roots.

前作から2年半のスパンでリリースされた6thアルバム。プロデューサーには彼らの初期作との関わりが深いAndy Millerを迎えている。

暗く立ち篭めるムーディな旋律にチャイミーな鍵盤音を散らしながらクレシェンドしていくオープナー"I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead"、重厚な気配はそのままに、その霧中でささくれ立ったファズ/ディストーション/ノイズの三重奏が猛る"Batcat"の嵐へと飛び込んでいく展開は、前作で確立したスタイルを踏襲して聴こえる。幻想的とも言っていいだろうその独特のウネリを持った分厚いサウンド・ウォールや、Tr.7"I Love You, I'm Going To Blow Up Your School"で聴ける、いつ果てるとも知れない長い長い轟音の咆哮は、直近2作で体得したバンドの新たなる強み。一方で、Glasgowらしい牧歌的なアンサンブルが跳ねる"The Sun Smells Too Loud"や、透明な叙情の波紋を静かに拡げる"Local Authority"などでは最初期の透徹としたセンチメンタルな一面を伝える。そういった意味で本作は、Young Teamリリースから10年を迎えたバンドの一つの区切り的な作品なのかもしれない。が、楽曲の安定感よりも野心の無さや求心力の弱さのほうが印象として強く残ってしまった本作は、全体としてはかなり物足りないというのが正直なところ。

まぎれもなくモグワイである。
目も眩むような鉄壁のギターサウンドウォールに、ところどころの変拍子や打ち込みなどの知性。まぎれもなくモグワイである。

モグワイは、ポストロックと言われていた。
ポストロックとは、「逸脱したロック」である。はじめの頃のモグワイは逸脱していた。

今のモグワイは、モグワイをやっている。
逸脱していない、クオリティの高い作品を上奏し続ける。
つまり、もう「ポスト」ロックではないのかもしれない。

そろそろ「ポスト」モグワイをやっているモグワイがみたい。

モグワイなので２つけました。他の新人なら３か４です
マンネリ化してる感じがします。batcat聴いてもう新しいモグワイは聴けないのかなあと
やるならbeast路線を伸ばしてほしかった。なんか中途半端です
