古巣キャピトル・レコードに復帰しての新作は、ビーチ・ボーイズの名盤『ペット・サウンズ』や2004年の『ブライアン・ウィルソン・プレゼンツ・スマイル』の続編ともいうべき自伝的なコンセプト・アルバム。純粋な新曲で構成された作品ということでは、本作はファースト・ソロ『ブライアン・ウィルソン』以来の傑作といえるだろう。

ルイ・アームストロングやレイ・チャールズが吹き込んでいる有名なスタンダード「ラッキー・オールド・サン」を皮切りに、カリフォルニアを舞台とした語り含みの活気に満ちた旅物語が、約37分間にわたって一気に展開され、まるでブライアンの自伝映画のサントラを聴いているかのようだ。

最初から最後まで聴きどころ満載だが、あえてハイライトを挙げるなら「明日への扉」。ビーチ・ボーイズの名曲「サーフズ・アップ」を彷彿させる、荘厳なムードの素晴らしいバラードだ。（木村ユタカ）


Album Details

That Lucky Old Sun is an album by Brian Wilson released in 2008 through Capitol Records. Originally commissioned by the Southbank Centre for its 2007 opening season, the work was debuted in a series of concerts at the Royal Festival Hall in London, England during September 2007. In January 2008 it was also performed at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia for the Sydney Festival. The album was written in collaboration with Van Dyke Parks (previous collaborator on SMiLE) and Wilson bandmate Scott Bennett. Wilson describes the album as "consisting of five 'rounds', with interspersed spoken word". Its main theme is celebration of life in Southern California, harking back to the themes of Wilson's earlier work with The Beach Boys. "California Role" and numerous spoken interludes such as "Cinco de Mayo" and "Between Pictures" celebrate the unique culture of Venice Beach, the Los Angeles film industry and numerous Californian landmarks including the Capitol Tower and Hollywood Bowl.

ブライアンは最近「ポール・マッカートニーと仕事がしたい」と
語ったらしいが、この新作を聴くと、逆にポールから「一緒に
仕事したい」と頼みに行った方がいいんじゃないかとさえ思う。

正直ポールファンなんだけど、新作に関してはブライアンの圧勝と
認めざるを得ない。

この年齢になってピークが来るなんて前例がないと思うけど
才能が枯れるどころか湧水のように溢れ出てる。
凄いな。

先週末、出張先のドイツで町を歩いていると、あのブライアンの声が聞こえてきた。。
melodyもコーラスも最高にいいじゃない！でも聴いた事ないぞ、、、
Wow ! 新譜が出たのか！最近チェックしてなかったので嬉しいサプライズでした。
早速アナログ盤を買ってきて、何度も聴きながらのレビューです（CD/DVDはいつものこちらで買います:-)

これはいいです、とっても良いです。
今までのソロ作で、一番ビーチボーイズを感じる作、でもあります。楽曲・サウンドが瑞々しいのと、コーラスがビーチボーイズっぽいから、かもしれません。

まず、古巣のキャピタルに戻って良かったなあ、と思いました。（でもあんまりセールスでブライアンを苛めないでね、キャピタルさん。）
アルバムのデザインからしてカッコイイ（バックデザインのブライアン、見てください。）。
そして、楽曲も、僕は彼の1stソロ"Brian Wilson"に次いで素晴らしいと思います。
サウンド（録音面で、最近のアルバムにあった、キツさ、みたいのがない。余裕があるんです）も、プロダクションも、一連のソロ作の中でベストとも言えるかﾆ。

僕はどちらかというと昨今のPet Sounds/Smile = Brian Wilson = Beach Boysというラインにはフィットしない方で、正直、Smileも含めた最近のソロ一連作は、積極的に聴く方ではありませんでした。どのaritistsよりもBrian, BB5が好きだし、ブライアンのコンサートは東京でもシカゴのHouse of Bluesにも行ったくらいの30年ファンなのに。

でもこの新作はもう、何度も何度も繰り返し聞いてます。とにかく、シンプルに曲・melodyが良いんです。アレンジも良い加減、ブライアンの歌も力が入ら過ぎず、イイ感じ。
Pet sounds/Smileといった路線が好きな方は勿論気にいるでしょうし（アノ感じは十分にありますよーー！）、Pet Sounds前のビーチボーイズファンの方にも、そして素敵なPop musicが好きな方にも大お勧めです。


特に好きな所は。。。

Venice Beachが終わり、Live let liveが始まる所のオケや、Can't wait too long->Midnight's another dayの美しさ（ブライアンの歌唱も最高！）、そして、ストレートに今は亡き兄弟の事を歌っているSouthern California（「Oh, oh, oh, it's magical」のmelodyは、彼が今でも第一級のmelody makerだと思わせてくれます）

これから更に聞き込んでゆくぞーー。

この久々の本格的な新作は、いろいろな因縁のある古巣キャピトルに戻ってビーチ・ボーイズ時代と同じスタジオで作り上げたBrianの半自伝的作品と言われるアルバムである。_SMiLE_を作り上げ、彼が自身の人生にしっかり向き合えるほど回復したことが、音楽にも表れている。このアルバムは、「カリフォルニア組曲」ともいうべきVan Dyke Parksとの共作アルバム_Orange Crate Art_のもつ幸せだが淡いノスタルジーとちょっぴりのペーソスを感じさせる独特の雰囲気と、_Gettin’ In Over My Head_の陽性のエネルギーを掛け合わせて、_SMiLE_のように隙間なくつながれた見事な構成によって全体で一つのドラマティックかつシンフォニックな作品を作り上げている―言い換えれば、Brianの魅力が存分に発揮された作品だ。歌声もしっかりして自信にあふれている。

そうしたことは、付属のＤＶＤを見ると一層はっきりとわかる。_SMiLE_のときにはBrianをその気にさせ彼の気分を維持させるのに周りのメンバーがかなり苦心していたようだが、このＤＶＤに収められたメイキング映像に見られるBrianは、むしろ周りのメンバーに録音をせかしたり、その演奏を厳しい目でチェックしていたり、様々な指示を出したりと、自信と創作意欲に満ちている。彼自身の語る作品誕生の背景やメンバーたちのコメントが聴けるのも貴重だが、なにより彼のそうした姿が見られるのがうれしい。キャピトルのスタジオでの“Good Kind of Love”と“Forever She’ll Be My Surfer Girl”のライヴ映像でも、メンバーたちと一緒に素晴らしい歌と演奏を聴かせる。

このアルバムは、彼のソロ・アルバム中、現時点での最高傑作と言ってもよいだろう。もちろん、今後への期待を十分に抱かせるものでもあるから、これがピークだとは言わないが。
